Wasn't able to eat here but they had a wide variety of gifts and food in North Carolina's oldest grocery store! Definitely a must visit while in Saluda. Try their local honey..it's one of the best I've had!

This is such a cool historic little store! Wards Grill has the best burgers, worth the trip alone!

23JUN23 ~ Beautiful Historic Downtown Saluda is throw back fond nostalgia for anyone old enough and lucky enough to have grown up in a small rural town. The exterior of Thompson's grocery store could be original, based on appearance, but the interior is like a state of the art modern grocery store. I went in there once to purchase bananas and the young woman, probably local from her genuinely friendly & helpful attitude, said that they did not have any bananas but the the Hardware Store down the street did have bananas. Don't you just love the small towns and their friendly ways...

It is an OK store with a moderate selection - but I was disappointed to see that it was mainly packaged goods you can find in most any convenience store. Of course, that is good for mountain tourists nearby who need the necessities because they have nothing, but I expected more. There was a good amount of southern/homestyle canned jams & jellies marketed to tourists visiting (which could be found at many gift shops in this part of the country), but none were necessarily local. We did pick out a peaches and pecans jam that ended up being awesome on freshly toasted sourdough though. We really wanted there to be more fresh vegetables, but it was slim pickings with just some scraps of not-so-great looking lettuce heads, carrots, and cucumbers. They did however have a nice deli in the far back with some interesting cheeses, as well as some options for pre-packaged and ready-to-eat meats/meals in the coolers adjacent to the deli case. The primary thing stocked here overall seems to be snack foods - of which, there is a good variety, but the shelves felt unnecessarily bare elsewhere and what was there was pretty generic. Service was OK, but from our experience getting cheese from the deli, it was evident that is not a typical request because it took awhile to square it all away. Overall, you'll be able to get some things to stock your pantry, but lowered expectations are necessary.

Thompson's was a wonderful grocery store and them they brought in new people to work in and manage it. Since then it has smelled really bad, the people are not accomudating and a lot if my favorite items are gone. it is so disappointing because we moved to Saluda 2 years ago and shopped there tegularly..

We’ve heard so much about Wards for Saturday breakfast. Looked forward to seeing for ourselves. Breakfast stops at 10.00! Bunch people behind us were there same reason. We all turned around and walked out. Another restaurant just south on right serves Saturday breakfast all day including lunch time. It was wonderful.

Highly disappointed. Was an amazing store until "new management" in 2023. Used to be a great place for a quick trip for fresh produce an needed items. Not anymore. They packed my meat wrong an it soaked thru everything before I got home less than 10 minutes away. They put my cheese on a meat plate to charge more. It's not Saluda anymore. Lost a long term loyalty.

This is a fantastic store in the wonderful small town of Saluda, NC. They have a meat market in store. They make homemade sausage that is to die for and their hand cut steaks will melt in your mouth. Thompson's Grocery makes it worth the entire trip to Saluda NC but there are quite a few hidden gems in this town.
