It's not very often that I get to go shopping in a store that's been opening it's doors continuously for 124 years, especially one that looks pretty much the same as it did in 1899 or as it did when was relocated in 1913 which was owned and operated by the same family until 2010. There was a short time that the store was closed in 2010 after the passing of the last remaining original family proprietor until the present owners reopened the doors in 2011 but that's like splitting hairs. Believe it or not they still carries staples like bread, butter and milk, but also other essential items for mountain life like local vegetables, jams, and honey to rakes, paint, plumbing and things that many people have never seen. The old original scales and carts can still be found scattered around the store amongst so many other things from the past that would be nearly impossible to find these days even if you have an Amazon Prime account. Although there has been some technology installed, the old cash register from 1913 still sits close by and is still operational if there is ever a need. So while Pace General still has thousands of traditional and contemporary items for sale, it's also a museum of mountain memories and memorabilia that will carry on this family legacy. If you really want a history lesson on the area spend a few hours here then drive around the area and see what living history looks like...

23JUN23 ~ What a great place & a great experience! I went to the Saluda grocery store to buy bananas. They said that they did not have bananas but the hardware store (Pace) down the street did carry bananas. What a great small town story, go to the hardware store for bananas! While in Pace I engaged several long term locals in conversation while there and thoroughly enjoyed the fellowship. The inside of the store was great old, small town architecture. They also sell ice cream that the mayor will scoop for you.

Part of the charm and soul of Saluda lives in this place- its the most welcoming, interesting, and helpful place around :) Genuinely recommend everyone to stop in and look, but always support your local businesses when you can.

Such a quaint town. We chatted with the mayor, who also owns the general store. Chalk full of history and local foods.

A pleasant eclectic experience. We were able to buy locally grown produce and locally made floor rugs. It was a short nostalgic trip back in time roaming through this quaint store. A pleasant experience indeed!

Store is a treasure. However, there was a middle aged man sitting at a desk in the store (sept 9, 22) so I said "Are you part of the Pace family (he is sitting at a desk IN Pace store,, right?) Infuriated he barked, "What did you ask me?" I cringed but said, "I was wondering if you are a Pace?" He barked back again with anger, "No! I am NOT a Pace!" I was actually shaking as I left. Don't know who he is or who he thinks he is but he IS running off business! Very sad.
