“I want to state upfront that I did not want to write this. Not because anything went wrong. Because nothing ever does, and a man starts to get nervous when nothing ever does. You write a glowing review and the universe hears you and decides to even the score. I am filing this anyway, because the record deserves to reflect what I have observed over repeated visits, and because if the universe is listening, I would like it on record that I said nice things first.
Here is the situation. I walk into this store and someone greets me. Every time. Not a distracted nod from behind a register, an actual greeting, followed almost immediately by an offer to help me find my way through a building that stocks roughly four thousand variations of 1 1/4 inch drywall screw. I have said before that an Ace Hardware is its own scavenger hunt, and I stand by that assessment, but the difference here is that someone hands you a map before you even ask for one.
The woman at the front till deserves a paragraph of her own and she is going to get one. She is consistently kind, consistently sharp, and consistently the person who notices the small thing before it becomes a problem.
This is why I keep going back. Not the inventory, though the inventory is fine. The people. I have been greeted, guided, and gently corrected by the same crew enough times now that I no longer think of it as good luck. I think of it as a standard, and standards make a man loyal in a way that sales and coupons never manage.
So here is my warning, and it is a strange one to write. If you shop here regularly, you will become the kind of person who expects to be greeted at every store, offered help before you have to ask. Other hardware stores will disappoint you after this. I am sorry in advance. You have been warned.”
