The Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art, founded in 1919, is one of Oklahoma’s oldest museums. Named after Father Gregory Gerrer, a talented Benedictine monk, the museum features a diverse collection of art and artifacts collected during his travels across Europe, Africa, and South America. Visitors are often surprised by the museum’s impressive and eclectic displays, which include Greco-Roman pottery, coins, and Egyptian mummies, such as the well-preserved "Tutu." The collection also boasts shrunken heads, tribal masks, indigenous clothing and tools, Chinese smoking pipes, and a variety of oil paintings, some created by Gerrer himself. Many exhibits are seasonal and rotate regularly, offering fresh displays and new items to explore on each visit. The museum’s collection represents over 5,000 years of culture and history, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the civilizations that created these objects. The staff are friendly, helpful, and enhance the experience, making it a welcoming place for all. The museum is a hidden gem, offering more than just art — it’s a journey through history and culture, with rare artifacts and engaging exhibits that encourage repeated visits. Its unique items and rotating displays make it a must-see destination for anyone interested in art, history, and ethnology.

Went on a field trip. The staff was extremely helpful and nice. Cool stuff to look at. Friar Geerer actually painted a portrait of Pope Pius X. His eyes follow you wherever you move. Very creepy and cool at the same time.
