ByWard Market is the most visited place in Ottawa, a lively outdoor shopping area. It explodes with activity in the summer, though it can also be very quiet on a cold winter day. It is similar to Seattle's Pike Place Market and is very touristy and crowded, but also fun to explore for a nice day out. The area offers a large variety of shops and restaurants, not just tourist traps. There are typical souvenir shops, but also many mom and pop run stalls with the coolest clothing, jewelry, and art. The many ethnic cuisines include Mexican, Japanese, Indian, Vietnamese, and BBQ, with food that is decently priced and delicious. Merchant stalls and fruit stands offer fresh foods, supporting local farmers and creators. Visitors can tour the market itself, find clean bathrooms, see art displayed, and take photos with the Ottawa sign and wall art. Features include a bakery, a candy store, a Beavertail truck, and even someone who does art on maple leaves. People are very friendly, and there is often music playing on the street. With plenty of street parking and many things to offer, it is worth a visit for a nice stroll.
