Ambassador Motel
1275 Great Northern Rd, Sault Ste. MarieThe Ambassador Motel is truly one of Sault Ste. Marie’s hidden gems - tucked along Highway 17/Great Northern Road as you come in from the north, and absolutely worth the stop. I usually stay elsewhere when I’m in town, but my regular spot was fully booked this trip. I’m honestly glad it was, because this motel has earned a permanent place on my list.
The owner is one of the most wonderful people you could hope to meet. She goes out of her way to make sure every guest feels welcome and taken care of, and that care shows in every part of the stay. As a First Nations, Transgender person, finding accommodations where I feel safe, respected, and genuinely welcomed can be challenging - but not here. She checked in with me throughout my stay, made sure I was comfortable, and treated me with kindness the entire time.
The rooms are newly renovated, clean, and comfortable, and the indoor sauna in the pool area is such a bonus after a long day of travel. I brought my dog with me, and the greenspace behind the motel is perfect - quiet, spacious, and well‑kept. (Just a reminder to other pet owners: please clean up after your dogs. The yard is beautiful and deserves to stay that way.)
There was a small hiccup one night due to other guests not respecting quiet hours, but it was handled quickly and professionally the next morning. The owner moved the guests immediately and made sure I could get proper rest for the remainder of my stay. It wasn’t her fault at all, but she still took responsibility for making things right.
In a city where affordable, pet‑friendly accommodations are becoming harder to find, the Ambassador Motel stands out. For business travel, personal travel, or anyone passing through with a pet, I can’t recommend it enough. I’ll definitely be returning.

Northern Superior Brewing Co. and The Tap Room
50 Pim St, Sault Ste. MarieNorthern Superior Brewing has a very nice and cheerful taproom. It’s quite airy, and shines during good weather. Things got busier the longer my friends and I were there. The staff was friendly, but became a bit scarce towards the end. Still, the beer was quite nice, and I didn’t notice any off flavors. They’re making good beer here. The bathroom was also quite nice, so that’s a bonus. This is probably the biggest microbrewery in the region from what I can tell, and their beer is available fairly far away. It made for a pleasant stop, and I’d have no qualms with stopping by again someday.

Fratelli's Kitchen
522 Great Northern Rd, Sault Ste. MarieDriving through Sault Ste Marie on our way back to Haliburton and stopped in at Fratelli’s for dinner. So damn glad we decided on this restaurant as there were quite a few to choose from.
They don’t take reservations but we were seated within 15 minutes of arriving and proceeded to order from our attentive and friendly server, Mary. Knowing we were driving for 6 1/2 hrs the next day we opted for a large pizza so we’d have leftovers. OMG! Their large pizza is MASSIVE!
The pizza itself was so good. They even had vegan cheese for us to add to the pizza which was a bonus.
Pizza was sauces to perfection (not dripping with sauce but still enough to add flavour, the additional toppings were not skipped on either.
Friends that we met ordered some pasta dishes which they loved and they were big servings too.
It was pretty quick from ordering to receiving our meal. We enjoyed our dinner and our conversation without feeling rushed. Mary even took the time to take a group pic for us on my iPhone.
Dinner for 5 was $175.00 but we had leftovers that will feed all of us for at least one more meal. Great price in my mind!!!
We plan on making a stop here each year on our way back from our Saskatchewan road trip.
Would highly recommend, especially if you are vegan and passing through. Fratelli’s for the win!

The Water Tower Inn, BW Premier Collection
360 Great Northern Rd, Sault Ste. MarieAbsolutely loved my stay here. I slept for 9 hours and very comfortably. I’m someone who wakes up every 30 minutes but I got an incredible rest at this hotel. The pool and jacuzzi are fantastic, the staff super friendly, shout out to Kimberly, and the room was very clean. I will definitely be back.
