403 E Main St, HummelstownI travel for work, and I've been visiting the Hershey area for the past 8 months or so. I've been to Soda Jerk twice now for takeout, and I'll probably hit them some more before my project is finished.
Soda Jerk embodies the classic 50's chrome-and-pastels diner atmosphere. They've got booths, they've got round spinny-stools at a counter, they've got old-timey photos on the walls. Vibe? Check.
Unlike a different area diner, the food at Soda Jerk is worth visiting for. Over the course of two different dinners I can weigh in on several items. The Reuben is a solid choice...good ingredients, the right amount of greasy, would get again. The Buffalo wings appetizer is darn good, too...they have one flavor of Buffalo, and it's flavorful, tangy and only mildly spicy to my Midwestern white-guy palate...maybe in Central PA it's considered fiery...I dunno. But it's good, and the wings are nicely crispy-but-juicy-but saucy. The popcorn shrimp is also good - there's not much to say about breaded, fried shrimp, but it was good. Maybe stay away from the poutine fries if you know what poutine is supposed to be...they don't use actual cheese curds, and mine cooled into a block of cheese with fries in it, and I didn't finish it.
In all, though, I'm pretty likely to get take-out here again.
