Great bookstore with an old-fashioned feel. Wish there was a more expansive LGBTQ section but it is what it is. Still found a lot of good used books.

This is a phenomenal second hand bookstore in Philadelphia. Not only is it in a great location on South Street, but it has a stellar selection of new and used books. Curtis, the owner, makes an effort to find and stock highly sought after and well kept editions. He's also a great conversationalist. I come for the books, but stay for the 30+ minute conversation. Great shop. Great owner. I couldn't recommend Neighborhood Books more.

walked by this place for the first time the other day & clocked that it looked rad (just a simple blue sign saying "books" in lowercase), and then when I walked by again today & they (aka Curtis, the one man show) was open. he's got "ISH" written next to closing time on his sign, which I think is rather brilliant. more people should value their time like that. wasn't super obvious at first it's a used book store, but... well. immediately upon entering I knew I'd come to the right place. the best used bookstores just have a FEEL to them like this. reminds me of one I used to go to off 5th street in Hillcrest in the aughts. which is beautiful, because for one brief, amazing, awkward moment the proprietor and I awkwardly connected over the fact that we both knew how grody parts of Southern California is, despite many people's incredibly idealized view of how clean & gorgeous the beaches must be. anyway. didn't venture downstairs to the kids/YA section, but I'll be back. picked up volume seventeen of the midwest studies in philosophy with both MacIntyre/Kripke in it, plus issues 1 through 3 of an Aquaman 5-set circa 1989. paid less than $25. GOLD.

Decent books, but the owner rudely shooed me away from his window as I waited for a cab, preferring that I block the sidewalk. There’s a BOOKS sign above the door, and another on the pavement, so I wasn’t obscuring the business. Next door is a residence. I guess he thought no one would see he has the new Michelle Obama otherwise…

Surprises await you in this deceptively small establishment. Whatever happens, be sure to bring a well stocked wallet.

Neighborhood Books can seem out of the way & a little forgotten about compared to some of the other longer running secondhand bookstores in Philly. Located in the Graduate Hospital area, away from the busier end of South St. might have something to do with that. It is a little oasis, & deserves consideration. The owner is friendly, the books are in favorable condition, & the prices are reasonable. The art, poetry, & sci-fi/fantasy selections have some titles you might not come across that readily. Greeting cards done in collage by a local artist are for sale. I'm for that kind of support. On my visit here I purchased, as a replacement, Diane Middlebrook's Anne Sexton biography (in hardback). Sometimes you just have to pounce on something in a secondhand shop because you might not come across it again, & then end up resorting to the the internet to hunt it down from a non-local business. I might not visit Neighborhood Books that often due to its location but I plan to keep it in mind for the possibility of the unexpected find.
