Argo Bookshop was founded by Mr. John George in 1966 on the south side of Ste-Catherine St. West. After a fire the following year, the shop relocated across the street to 1915 Ste-Catherine West. Business was slow at first, but Mr. George deeply cared for his store and the community of readers that grew around it, so he kept to it, operating the store until his passing in 2006.
In October 2021, the Argo again moved, anchoring itself at 1841-A Ste-Catherine Ouest, a half block east of its home for 52 years. We continue to believe in the example set by Mr. George. We provide a well-curated book selection, a welcoming place to read and chat, and host events regularly. We aim to provide a community space for readers of all interests and ages.
