“I had a truck send a rock into my windshield on about Sept 19, 2025.
Unfortunately I have a TESLA, Model Y 2026. These windshields are different and I didn't know that. ( foreshadowing, read on).
Replacing windshield is not something a covered by a Home visit - so SAFELITE called and requested I set up appointment requiring me to bring car into their local shop. No problem.
Except it was a prolonged visit because changing windshield usually only took a couple of hours (mostly waiting for glue to set up) - at least on previous replacements [4 other incidents over 30 years].
Except now car had problem with the electronics in the windshield. Yeah, I didn't know it either they had electronics in windshield.
So shop tech had to replace electronic sensor in new windshield with the same part in old windshield.
On my way home it would immediately hang on the left side of the lane.. drifting into the oncoming traffic.
I later photographed the BIG screen showing this HANGING ON LEFT behavior was noticed.
Cruising along at 45 mph into a major intersection it slammed on the brakes as it came up to A GREEN Traffic light!
Then it happened again a quarter of a mile later at another intersection, at another GREEN traffic light! - with heavy traffic following behind me!
I suddenly realized I was about to get rear ended and it was FED'S fault!
I panicked and hit the gas pedal to keep from being rear ended! This was 2 incidents in less than a mile!
After this incident I made my way back to the shop and told them what had happened.
A tech took car for a drive and said it didn't do anything I usual while he drove it. The shop tech hooked up the car to a laptop and called a TESLA tech at their customer service.
The techs told me everything checked out, electronically, and that they were advised there was nothing more that they could do except advise me to drive it a few days and see if the problem disappeared or showed up again.
I drove it home less than an hour after previous driving incident and NOTHING! No hanging off left side of the lane, No Slamming on the brakes at Green lights or Intersections with traffic lights.
So if you get your TESLA windshield replaced, drive home slowly and be aware these incidents can happen to you.
I want to thank the Techs at the Camden, SC location of SAFELITE windshield repairs. These guys were great and quite patient with me despite my panicked state.
Allstate covered windshield replacement so there was NO charge (ZERO) to me at the time of windshield replacement!
Otherwise it would have cost me around $1,500 according to invoice.”
