They’re trying. You can feel the trying, There are newer signs prompting reflections on the atrocities that occurred here, and a new exhibit building that makes an attempt to at least create broader context for the battle of Franklin. But the house tour is still firmly in the “look at the pretty woodwork!” genre. Which is what a few guests still seem to want - our tour included a proudly oblivious grandmother dragging her school-aged granddaughters (whose wonderful mother removed them after about two rooms) who had dozens of questions about the house and its white occupants. The remaining dozen or so of us felt like we were in an elaborate comedy sketch, but the guide seemed fine with centering her throughout the tour.
If you’re interested enough in history to be considering a visit…maybe wait a few years to see if the trying starts to pay off a bit more.

Highly recommend the tour of this beautiful house & its outbuildings, including the surviving slave housing. The field hospital & family-run Confederate cemetery are impressive, unique, & moving. It is hallowed ground.

If you love all things history, then you have to stop in Franklin, TN and especially at the Carnton. If those walls could talk. We thoroughly enjoyed our tour guide Steve and hearing about the history of this beautiful home and property.

Amazing tour by Sheila who really brought the place alive with amazing storytelling, not just of the rich plantation owners but also the enslaved people that live there.

I’m absolutely in love with history and if you are too I definitely recommend coming here! I went with a history club at my school and it was amazing! The tour guides here are very educated and you can tell they love what they do! This place is absolutely beautiful inside and out! Will definitely come back soon!!

We spent the weekend touring many historical sites and this one was by far the best - particularly because our tour guide, Jay, was very engaging. Definitely a worthwhile stop!

It was nice years ago but today its not the same. The tour is full of lies and fictional events. I wouldn't waste my time if you want to know what took place here. Best thing you can do is read books that have to do with the aera, home and the war then make your own opinion.

Our tour guide brought history to life with his tour and really helped our group experience the history and timeline to the fullest. He even tied in an interesting fact about a present day singer!

Great perspective of the battle of Franklin, TN. The house was used as a Confederate hospital following the clash in 1864. There is a fee to tour the house. The tour lasts approximately one hour. A Confederate cemetery and 19th century garden are also available to explore. Most of the items in the house are not original due to the fact that the house was passed into private hands after the original family moved out.

Our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable. The tour of the plantation house was quite interesting. Be sure to visit the cemetery and walk the grounds. The souvenir shop had great gifts and the staff was very nice.

Amazing experience. Lyle was AN AMAZING tour guide. He did a wonderful job giving the overall historical view of what was occurring in the battle, the experience of the family, and the history of the house. This pulled you in and allowed you to truly feel the experience of history. Highly recommended. We visited other homes locally and while they were good, this was the most inclusive and expansive.
