Went to Oak Ridge Animal Shelter to adopt a cat but couldn't breath in there as soon as I walked in the door. Ammonia was all I smelled and my eyes and throat started burning. All the cats were coughing and sneezing with runny eyes. Please open the doors to this place to air it out. I couldn't stay but would have if the condition wasn't so horrific .

Be prepared to have the foul smell of ammonia (and more) to hit you in the face as you enter the front office. I immediately got a very poor impression of the place. The barking was so loud that we couldn't hear the person who was showing us around. I understand that these places are limited by budget constraints, but...

Were extremely helpful in locating the owner of a stray dog from it's chip and contacting the owner immediately.

Don’t get animals from them, they hate veterans. If you suffer from ptsd or anxiety it’s a no go for them. They tell you it doesn’t matter what happened in the past with you. You can’t have an animal. Boycott this shelter. They are evil people

I know lots of folks who volunteer at the shelter. They have told me how far the shelter has come. The staff is very nice and helpful now from what I hear. If you see a volunteer down there, make sure and thank them for their hard work saving lives!!! And please make sure to make the shelter your first stop when looking for your new family member.

The shelter choose to send her to a rescue mission that pays more then the regular adoption fee. Instead of adoption to a loving forever home. I definitely understand why shelters are over ran. I wish nothing but for the best for ?Lydia

So far this looks like a good place. We found a dog and brought it to them luckily the dog had a microchip and they were able to locate the owners to come pick him up.

Seemed super nice at first but staff and volunteers took some jokes my husband made as a red flag that we not suitable to adopt and banned us. We didn't find out until our 3rd visit in the sane day and after submitting an application and all of our vet records for our other 4 adopted pets. We were really excited about welcoming a furbaby. Don't make jokes; they'll think you're serious and break your heart.

They dont care about cats, just throw them in a river or break their neck,i wont be donati g to them anymore,My sister's neighbor died and so my sister took cat,saw cat many times while lady was living, thought it was good and fine but there's something a little wrong with it. She explained that it was fixed, had never been outside or near other cats or dogs, might not win a fight or might get hit by car.they wouldn't take cat,my sister has to find so.e way to get it help as she can't keep it. And while there 2 big dogs were brought in,this was the second time that owner said they had escaped, she showed up as ppl who brought dogs in were trying to file for adoption,no tags or collars, should she get to keep dogs Nope, she too busy to buy dog tags and collars or fix fence, unfit dog parent!!!! My sis tried doing the right thing,to get that cat meds and a good home, had bought food and litter for it but realized it needed something,so much for good shelters

After the death of one of our dogs due to old age, we were looking to adopt. We found a very lovable Presa Canaria and being familiar with the breed, and feeling that this would be a good thing for our other dogs, we put in an application. However, even though I own a home along with two cars and have raised five children. I was denied because my daughter who adopted a cat last year (who was not fixed) and the cat got pregnant- she had called the shelter for assistance regarding the cat- AND WAS DENIED- WE STILL HAVE THE CAT- Because she tried to do the right thing and I live at the same address; I was denied. I tried to explain to the man on the phone that this was not me and I advocated for myself. He very curtly informed me he was banning me from ever adopting. How awful- not only would I have assisted in donating items to the shelter, but I would’ve provided a very loving home for Raptor. Obviously in their eyes, it is wrong to ask questions and to advocate for yourself in situations where you have been wrongly accused. Do not adopt from here. Do not waste your time; drive to Knoxville, where they have organized and fair adoption practices..

The staff are so kind and have the biggest hearts. They truly care for these animals as if they were their own, and work to ensure every animal goes to a safe and loving home.

They don't come out when a complaint is filed and returns animals without asking owners to prevent problems.
