About French Legation State Historic Site The French Legation State Historic Site, established in 1841 as the residence of the French charge d'affaires to the Republic of Texas, offers a glimpse into a unique piece of American history. Located amidst modern development in East Austin, it features a lovely, scenic view of downtown and the Capitol. Visitors can explore the beautiful grounds for free, while the buildings require an admission fee. Inside, the site showcases well-preserved historical pieces with informative readings that provide context, making it an educational experience that typically lasts between 15 to 45 minutes. Tours, led by knowledgeable docents, offer insights into the site's history, with special attention given to questions from younger visitors. The café on site, which opens early, adds to the charm, and events are held periodically. While the grounds are wheelchair accessible, the upstairs is not part of the exhibit. Some visitors feel that the focus on the era of the French Legation overlooks the original land inhabitants. Despite some feelings of being underwhelmed, many find the site a hidden gem worth visiting, especially for those who enjoy house museums.

Well worth visiting and paying to see the buildings. Parking is around the block. Beautiful grounds and view of DT. The interior of the house is just so well done.
