Newsom Vineyards, established in 1986 with just 2 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, has grown into a prominent Texas vineyard covering 160 acres and cultivating 19 varietals. Located on the Texas High Plains AVA near the New Mexico border at an elevation of 3,700 feet, the farm's shallow, low-vigor soil helps produce high-quality fruit by challenging the vines. The vineyard supplies grapes to around 20 wineries across Texas. Visitors can enjoy a tasting experience at the charming, restored 1907 cottage in Comfort, where the on-site tasting room features a selection of wines made exclusively from Texas-grown fruit. The wines are known for being smooth on the palate yet bursting with flavor, with many being straight varietals. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, offering engaging conversations about Texas grapes and the wines. The outdoor courtyard often hosts music, and nearby on-site Mexican food trucks add to the welcoming atmosphere. Newsom Vineyards is recognized as one of the "secret" gems of the Texas Hill Country, appreciated for its consistent quality and friendly small-town vibe. Visitors frequently mention the enjoyable tasting experience, the beautiful outdoor area, and the chance to learn about Texas wines from passionate staff, making it a must-visit destination for wine enthusiasts in the region.
