I've been coming to Maru for the past 15 years, and it's been the only place I go to get my injera and Ethiopian spices. The owners are lovely & kind; they always take time out to explain if I have any questions about the use of ingredients. Maru is a staple in the East African community, and I hope I can still come here decades from now to buy fresh injera.

My Eritrean partner ran out of some of his back home spices and tea, so I decided to stop by on a day I found myself in southwest Houston. It’s located in a small shopping center with plenty of parking space available. It was my first time here so I didn’t know what to expect, but was able to find all that we needed. I bought a bunch of QUALITY FRESH Berbere, Mitmita, Kibbeh and even some Ethiopian loose leaf tea. The guy at the register (my guess maybe the owner) was very welcoming, friendly and kind. I was on very limited time due to stopping by before work lol and definitely did not get to check out all they had. The store was smaller than I expected but it was jam packed with so many items and options. I know there was plenty of more spices, teas and I didn’t know at the time but the cashier also mentioned they sold injera. I cannot wait to go back for some injera as my partner and I usually have to order some through takeout at Blue Nile Restaurant. My partner was/is very delighted, satisfied and we made Tibs, Gomen, Silsi, and Ades soon as I brought home all I purchased that day. He’s already making a list of what all else I need to get when I’m there again. Lol I’m looking forward to actually planning my next visit, so I have more time to explore the store.

The highlight of the Maru Grocery is undoubtedly its wide array of exotic spices and herbs. From the fiery berbere to the earthy mitmita, each spice revealed a depth of flavor that is quintessentially Ethiopian. I was amazed by the quality and freshness of these spices, ensuring an unparalleled experience in my home-cooked Ethiopian dishes.
