They consistently carry an outstanding selection of rare and hard-to-find spirits, and I especially appreciate that they have the best variety of Turkish raki I’ve found anywhere in the DMV. I’ve purchased many bottles there over the years, including Turkish raki, Beylerbeyi Gobek, and have always been impressed with the quality of their products and service. The shop is well-organized, welcoming, and has a fantastic selection. Bonus is that he had it ready in a clean stack for my husband to pick up the day before our event. This is a great example of a welcoming and exemplary small business in DC. P.S. they take returns for boxes of beers etc. that are unopened, not that we had any to return, but this is a really a good quality to look for in a spirits store. Thanks for all your help!!”

Jason is an amazing pharmacist, he is always friendly, and very informative! We got our Whole Foods back (although it is mechanized, so the ambience sucks), and Trader Joe's opened, as did Wegman's and Streets. So there is competition, definitely, but this little corner shop still has my heart.”

“I have lived at Dolley Madison for over 20 years and love this market. Its small, but for its size, they have a good variety of items. One thing I would like to see them do is yank out the Blue Bunny Ice Cream, errr Blue Bunny Frozen Dairy desert freezer and sell REAL ice cream, and not the frozen dairy desert garbage. I have a recommendation, a brand that is local to the east coast, been around for years and really needs more places in NoVa to carry the brand.HERSHEYS ICE CREAM.Its REAL Ice cream, they have great ice cream, and ice cream novelties. They have a great variety of products and with the limited amount of places that sell it, if you were to sell it and word got out, it will sell, it will be a successful switch. Look at Vienna Drug Store. They are ALWAYS. selling out of MANY of the most popular varieties. I know because I usually buy them out of some of their products on a regular basis. Please support an ice cream company that still believes in ICE CREAM and not one of the many "Frozen Dairy Desert" Companies. But great store, friendly people, good prices and they pack a lot in such a small space.”

“I do have an ABC store two minutes away but if I drive three more minutes, I can go to this location. The one closer to me is fine, but it is a bit of an older store. That being said, this one always has French pastis in stock & on the shelf; Pastis is similar to Italian Sambuca or Greek Ouzo but not quite the same, lol. Sambuca is made from elderberries, Ouzo is made from distilled grapes & aniseed, & Pastis is made from anise, star anise & fennel. The store only has Pernod, which we do like, but you can special order Ricard, which is mine & my French hubs preference; they are from the same company & are both anise-flavored spirits that have their roots in absinthe, but they taste different enough from each other. Pernod is the closet to Absinthe & the company, Pernod-Ricard does, in fact, make real absinthe as well. Look up the history, it's actually an interesting story of how Pastis came about. But I digress, lol. Pastis is an anise-flavored apéritif, or apéro as the French call it, & it is a digestif (aides in digestions). It is typically drank before a meal & served over a couple ice cubes & diluted with water so that it becomes beautifully cloudy & almost a golden, iridescent yellow. Pernod is made from distillates of star anisé (on of my fave spices), fennel, & 14 other botanicals such as coriander, mint, chamomile, & Veronica to name a few. Pernod has a low licorice content which sets it apart from Ricard, which has a more pronounced licorice flavor I must say the staff here is super friendly & the female manager is the best; she always has a big smile on her face. FYI ~ if you want liquor in VA you must purchase it from the ABC store aka Alcohol & Beverage Control Authority.”

“Love this quaint little neighborhood grocery — Magruder’s is a total throwback in the best way. It still looks and feels like a real old-school market, and that’s exactly the charm. The produce is the star: if I can’t make it to a farmer’s market, this is where I head, because the fruits and veggies are amazingly well-priced and consistently fresh. It’s also way less crowded than Safeway or Whole Foods, which makes the whole trip feel easy instead of exhausting. They also run great weekly specials on basics like milk and eggs, and the deli section is excellent — including a surprisingly strong fish selection. The wine section is huge (almost half the store), which is kind of funny since I don’t even drink, but it’s still impressive and adds to that classic neighborhood-market vibe. Packaged foods and canned goods aren’t as competitively priced and the variety is limited, but that’s not why I come here. For fresh organic vegetables, a standout deli, better-than-big-box prices on essentials, and a cozy throwback feel, Magruder’s is a gem.”
