If you look closely at that picture and use your imagination you will see the men of the 49th Pennsylvania Volunteer Regiment. June 3rd, 1864 at 4:30 in the morning they charged across that 3/4 mile field at the Confederate position with Richmond 12 miles beyond. Part of the only charge that Grant ever regretted resulted in the bloodiest hour on the US soil. The Battle of Cold Harbor Virginia near Mechanicsville, VA.

THESE PICTURES DO NOT EXIST AT THIS LOCATION! VISITORS CENTER LOCATED DOWNTOWN RICHMOND!!!! We tried to go to this spot where it looked like the visitors center is located but it leads to an empty field. You can see battlefields in this area next to this location but the pics are misleading as to where the visitors center is. Hopefully this will save someone a 8 mile trip in the wrong direction. 5 stars because it's not the fault of the establishment... they do a wonderful job keeping the grounds and preserving history.

Wonderful experience. Only thing is, one has to remember how the landscape has changed over the years.Dog-friendliness: Met several pups along the trails. All very well-mannered, nice owners, too.

Took the short walk, just the right amount. Beautiful scenery and lots of history.

It was such a beautiful eerie place. The feeling of standing where 1000s of men fought and died and went missing regardless of what side they fought for was a very serine feeling! We got lost trying to find the bigger battle field thankfully we drove right past a park ranger who was so kind and helpful he asked which field we were looking for as they have multiple I wasn't sure so I handed him my husband's phone with the GPS he kindly pointed us in the right directed. We spend about 2 hrs just walking around taking it all in. I highly recommend!!Playground: It's a historic battle field not a playground so chances are there ain't one. You come to places like this to learn not play on a play ground. That's what playgrounds are for.Restrooms: Not sure if they have restrooms. I didn't see any so when we got a few miles away from the battle fields I took a wee in the woods.Dog-friendliness: Seen a few ppl walking their dogs out in the middle of the battle field. Not sure if they are actually allowed or not.Picnic area: I'm sure you can find a tree somewhere spread out a blanket and have a picnic. You don't really need a "picnic" area!

The cannons were amazing. A must go place if you're in the area.

Take a step back in time, walk thru the paths see the area's where people fought and died, the trenches are still there, a few places have audio depictions.

Not a contiguous site. Hard to tell what’s open and closed and where things are. On our trip, only Cold Harbor VC was open and there’s little to see or learn there. Not to be confused with the (not-NPS) American Civil War Museum at Historic Tredegar

Great trails. The overall park system around Richmond feature battlefields that demonstrate every stage of the civil war and include factories and hospitals conventional battlefields and forts. Quite a variety of terrains and natural features as well as the historical. Truly something for everyone.

Interesting. Start at the Tredegar museum for a good basic overall understanding of the war..(hint from the Canadians). Our favorite stop was the Chimborazo hospital. The ranger was really informative.

Easy walk with a couple of trials to fit how long you want to walk. Wildlife is mostly squirrels as this is a residential area. Trail traffic varies but at least one or two others are always on the trail. Dog friendly. Haven't been in the shop or restrooms to give feedback.
