“There’s a specific kind of nostalgia that comes with Houghton Market that’s hard to replace, because it wasn’t just a grocery store—it was a rhythm of life in Kirkland. It had that slightly scrappy, neighborhood-first feel where you knew the layout without thinking about it, and you built little routines around it without ever calling them routines. It was the kind of place where grabbing “just a few things” always turned into a longer stop because you’d recognize what was on the shelves, what was in the deli case, what smelled good that day.

When Metropolitan Market took it over, it didn’t erase that memory, but it reframed it. Everything got more intentional—lighting, presentation, prepared foods, the whole experience—but the emotional layer stayed behind in fragments. So you get these moments where you’re standing in the same general space and your brain is doing two things at once: appreciating how good everything is now, while also quietly remembering how it used to feel when it was just… yours, in a more local way.

That’s probably why the longing for expansion up north feels so strong. Snohomish and Everett don’t really have an equivalent of that “high-end but still grab-a-weeknight-dinner” market. There are good grocery stores, sure, but not many that blend comfort, quality, and indulgence in the same walkable, browseable way. So Metropolitan Market feels like something missing rather than something optional.

If it ever did expand into Snohomish County, it would likely land really well—not just as another grocery option, but as that familiar “this is where I pick up dinner, but also accidentally spend 20 minutes looking at desserts” kind of place.”

“It's really hard to get shopping done if you go really late at night because they have to stock. I understand they have a job to do but find it extremely aggravating when the aisle you need to go down are blocked by all their crap. At least make it so you are able to get down every aisle.”

“The old "Thriftway" organization of grocery stores here in the NW are no more. The only Thriftway store name is the one at Ballinger of which is now a lone family run store with not much clout to buy big like the big stores and sell cheaper, like the big stores can.

Yes, prices are higher here but their quality is good. Apparently they do a super-big wine market throughout the NW and western states. Produce is always like perfect but more than you will pay at the big stores.

Very convenient for all who live nearby and this population is growing.”

“This euro deli always has great hearty bread, with delicious fresh cut salami. Amongst many other cultural delights.
And the owner is such a sweet lady. I always stop here when I'm in town.”

“I shop regularly at the PCC Columbia City Co-op and I appreciate the quality of food and the wonderful staff, from the person who stacks the chard so perfectly, to every cashier who is friendly and helpful.
And for the person who came to my door yesterday wanting me to sign a petition against the store because he thinks the rules against wearing political signs etc. are not fair, grow up! Every store has rules on behavior, dress, etc and you have the freedom work elsewhere..”

And honestly, that’s why it feels a little frustrating there isn’t a stronger presence up north in Snohomish or Everett. It’s exactly the kind of market that would do well there: good prepared foods, strong deli culture, and a “treat yourself but also grab dinner” vibe that just isn’t really replicated in the same way in that area.”

“I stopped by Whole Foods yesterday (8/16/2026, around noon) to pick up some flowers and asked a a young guy working there to help arrange a bouquet. I was lucky enough to get one of the most beautiful bouquets I’ve ever bought. (IIRC, his name is Logan)

I asked if he had studied floral design because the bouquet was so beautifully arranged, and he shyly said, “No, just practice.” You know what, I could really see the care and craftsmanship he put into something as simple as arranging a bouquet, and that made the flowers feel even more special.

“I walked a mile to the store last night intending to get just a couple things I needed. Once there I found a few items on sale that I could use, and then a couple more. I soon had a double armload and needed a basket. Got to the door and was looking for a place to set the load down to grab a basket without looking like a shoplifter when an employee noticed my situation and offered to help. It was great to get the help needed without having to search out someone and explain the issue I was having. I ended up filling my pack and carrying a bag back home as well. My thanks and appreciation to the staffer named Blue for helping me out!”

“I visit the store yesterday Redmond Mayuri RTC it's so good experience I tried that Indian sweets it's so good and fresh and the staff is so good they explained each and every sweets thank you”

“Had no idea this market existed, i found my favorite product there, discovering an ethic market right in my neighborhood was refreshing. Clean, neat, and professional service, compared to the Hypermarket which is unclean, very unfriendly, and poorly managed. So I will be giving my business now to IFB Market from now on.”

“My favorite grocery store in the area. Always clean and organized, all the employees have been great and security is very nice. I enjoy grabbing lunch here after running errands, and the frequent clearance items make it affordable!
My only minor complaint would be that the automatic scanner at the entrance door doesn’t seem calibrated properly? maybe one side is broken? It often takes a moment of having to reposition to get it to work for me.”

“After the 2025 renovation, you can get pretty much everything you need in terms of day to day grocery, unless you want something fancy or “gourmet”. they even have a small deli. And of course low prices. Pharmacy is now much better stocked and staffed.”
