I've been a Crossfitter for almost 7 years and a regular member at TPH for almost 2 years. TPH is hands down my favorite of the Crossfit gyms I've worked out at. The coaching is top notch, with a focus on safety and scaling workouts to meet the needs of each individual. The programming is thoughtful, with clearly-defined training cycles and routine retesting to measure our progress. And last but not least, the community is extremely friendly and supportive.

I can't say enough about how much I have enjoyed my time at CrossFit Twenty Pound Hammer. When I first attended, the team made me feel welcome and wanted to support my ability and help me grow. They asked me about any injury concerns and helped me scale so that I could grow at my own pace and never made me feel like I was in competition or was underperforming against a set standard. I consider the team my friends and the entire gym community has been nothing but amazing. It's been nearly 3 years that I've been attending and I still look forward to the workouts.

I moved to the area in May of 2022 and tried 5 gyms before I found Twenty Pound Hammer. During my search, the coach at TPH was the first coach in all 6 gyms to ask me if I had any injuries they should know about. I signed up and never looked back. The coaching and community at this gym is amazing. I’ve grown so much here and would encourage anyone looking to improve their fitness and find community to join the gym.

Member since 2020. When I first reached out to CrossFit Twenty Pound Hammer the entire team made me feel immediately at home and catered my fitness journey to my ability. Since I joined my strength and range of motion have increased immensely while I haven't hurt myself trying to live up to a certain stereotype standard that I believed about CrossFit before joining. The entire gym is respectful of each other's abilities and makes me feel welcome and supported and I consider it a safe space and the members as friends. Almost 3 years and running and I still look forward to attending the workouts and seeing the team.

Member since 2016. I left my previous box because I was interested in individualized programming to build STRENGTH and SKILL. Over 6 years, I've added 10 pounds of muscle, reduced my body fat, and have overcome a couple of injuries by getting stronger and learning to move better. Monica writes my program, which has included various combinations of body building, power lifting, and single-leg/arm and structural work - generally with lots of reps and tempo. She nimbly adjusts my program to augment my other physical activities and to address identified gaps. I arrived at Twenty Pound a skinny 50 y/o runner, wondering if it was too late to get jacked. IT WASN'T. With Monica's help, I've been able to build shoulders, lats, glutes, core stability ... all of which has radically improved my gymnastics skills, my Oly lifting, and my life outside the gym.

I've been working out with the crew at Twenty Pound Hammer off and on for as long as they've been open and my fitness journey always ends up back here. They really do have a special thing going. The training, the space, and the community are all amazing. I attended group classes for years until I wanted to start specializing my training to fit my individual goals and transitioned to their individualized offering. I would recommend that anyone, whether they're new to fitness and training in general, or a seasoned fire breather come and spend a few sessions in the gym. You won't be disappointed.

Been in the gym for a year - everyone is so nice and welcoming here. Nice location, easy to park if you drive, and the coaching I received is top tier quality for sure!IMO crossfit gym is just like a regular gym but is much more effective and make the most out of workout time. If you are like me going to gym from time to time just to keep adding exercise to daily life, try this gym!

I've been attending this gym for almost a year, and it's been an amazing experience! All of the coaches are extremely welcoming, friendly and knowledgeable. If you are like me and found yourself wandering around the gym weight room and not pushing yourself in your workouts, I highly recommend you try a class at Twenty Pound Hammer. It's been nothing but rewarding for me physically and emotionally.I would also add: don't to be intimidated. Everyone is always learning something new and in different places with their skills and fitness level. The coaches do a great job at meeting you at your skill level by scaling workouts so they're doable, while also teaching you new things and pushing you to do your best. In short, it's a wonderful community and I highly recommend this gym!

TLDR: Female-led, amazing coaches, intelligent and safe programming, wonderful community vibes, generous trial plans. 5/5, would recommend to anyone, regardless of skill/fitness level and or familiarity with Crossfit.Full review: I have been a member at TPH for over a year now (joined Jan 2021,) and I still frequently get emotional regarding what an impact this gym and its coaches have had on my well-being. I cannot say enough or too many good things about Twenty Pound Hammer. I have a history of various eating disorders, body dysmorphia, and exercise addiction, so I was weary of starting Crossfit, given its generic reputation for being anywhere from culty and overly intense to downright unsafe. TPH IS NONE OF THOSE THINGS. Twenty Pound Hammer has allowed me to feel strong and excited about getting stronger. I come from a 20+ year background in dance and have a group fitness certification myself, so my standards and expectations for coaches/instructors is high. The coaches at TPH exceed them *daily.* They are so so smart, so safe, so kind, and so in tune with the people in the room at any given time. They always lead the group through a thorough and relevant warm up, welcome questions, offer lots of scaling options, share helpful tips and tricks, and in general are just amazing. I firmly believe this is the best Crossfit gym in Seattle. Give the gym a try for a week or a month; they have trial plans to see if TPH is a good fit for you! Working out has played such a big role in my mental and physical wellbeing in the past couple of years so when I moved to Seattle, finding a gym was a priority. I was pleasantly surprised when I walked into TPH and immediately felt like home. After trying out different gyms on ClassPass and other crossfit gyms in the area, I finally tried out TPH trial week - best decision ever. Programming - I am not new to crossfit but when I first started crossfit, the workouts didn't make sense to me. After a while I realized that good programming matters, as well as knowledgeable staff. The programming at TPH really impressed me, and that it is communicated well to the class. Every workout primes you to move better in the next workout, a lot of focus on form, safety, efficiency rather than just gains and PRs. Community - members and coaches are really friendly and supportive. Great mix of experience levels. There are some community activities that I have not had the opportunity to partake in, but maybe in the future. Space & equipment - Any and all equipment you need, and they are well maintained. There is a separate space in the back for personal training, and individualized training. Normal class size is about 8-12, sometimes we have to share a rack no more than 2 per rack - and the workouts are well thought out so it's never an issue with equipment or space. Bonus: Parking lot! (but don't park immediately in front of the Subway storefront because the Subway folks get mad).

I've been crossfiting for almost 8 years and a member at TPH for about 3.5 of those years. Prior to that, I've been a member at 6 other crossfit locations, most located in north Seattle for times periods ranging from 4 months to over a year. TPH (obviously) has been my favorite for a variety of reasons. I'm hoping this review will be helpful for more experienced individuals looking to find a new affiliate or functional fitness style gym. Programing: TPH has had the best fit (for me) of programing and coaching out of all 7 places I've held memberships. I enjoy the more classic crossfit style programing of a warm-up, followed by an olympic lifting component, and ending with a workout of the day. Monica, the owner, strikes a good balance of having longer more endurance workouts intermixed with some shorter more sprint style. Some other locations I've been at sometimes hardly did olympic lifting, were almost all longer endurance workouts, or were almost all shorter sprint style, so the mix here is good. Workouts are posted online via a membership app on the Sunday before each week. I really appreciate this in terms of being able to plan for the week ahead and plan around other exercise type activities I do outside crossfit so that I don't overdo anything. I also enjoy that workouts don't get too repetitive despite moving through focused strength cycles. My only complaint is that occasionally there is a really high volume of a movement we haven't practiced much recently put into a wod. There is also individual training/coach offered. I can't really comment on this as I prefer and only attend the group classes. Coaching: The core team of current coaches here are excellent. Movements are taught consistently across coaches, coaches are attentive to form and safety, and class sizes are kept small enough that normally coaches can actually attend to each member as needed. They have all been able to help me with modifications as needed both for my mobility idiosyncrasies and for a knee injury I got while hiking. The team is friendly and approachable as others have mentioned (this is less important to me than their actual knowledge and ability to analyze movement). Most crossfit's I've been a member at had at least one weaker link in the coaching staff where I might try to avoid classes taught by that person on on that day. The core 4 current evening coaches are all top notch (Monica, Melissa, Tony, and Edwin). I don't do morning classes, so sorry no shout out to morning coach people. Community: A pro for me is being a member at a place where there is a wide range of abilities and levels of experience. I'm not a fan of a gym where most people are performing at more of an "elite" level or where most people are more of a beginner level. TPH feels like a good mixture of beginners, mid level folks, and high performers to me. While some other places have a more close knit community and culture, TPH is still at a nice midpoint where you don't feel just like a number and people are welcoming and supportive. The overall diversity of members is pretty reflective of this area of Seattle's general population. A thing that I did not like as well is that they were participating in ClassPass prior to the pandemic preventing it. I'm a firm believer that those new to crossfit would really benefit from at least one or more beginning/intro on-ramp style classes so they can learn the basic movements. Otherwise, too many extremely unexperienced people can dominate too much of the coach's attention during a class. Having random ClassPass people coming in and out can also make it harder to have a consistent community/culture. Location, Logistics, and Interior Space: Currently there is an online system for reserving classes via the app. This is a great feature if you prefer attending less busy class times as well as making sure popular times don't get too full. Equipment provided is well maintained (Thanks Melissa!), kept clean, and is of good quality. Monic

This was our first gym when we moved to WA a year and a half ago. I love how welcoming the coaches was and still is to this day! They will ALWAYS greet you with a smile on their face. They make various activities to keep the community included. Such as the seasonal Friday Lifting Nights or Friday Night Light Hero Wods. The gym has made such a great job with taking precautions due to COVID. So no need to worry when you're here! Not only they provide group classes, you have the option of Personal Training, Nutrition Program and/or Individual Design Program. So, no need to adjust to only one thing! If you had certain goals and need that extra help, I HIGHLY recommend getting a coach to help YOU. If your in the Ballard area and need a great workout, I recommend having this place in mind.

I can not recommend this gym and its coaches highly enough. The programming is smart and fun, as are every single one of the coaches, and community as a whole. Definitely a special type of Crossfit gym worth checking out.
