District Market is a clean, neat, and well-organized store conveniently located near the University of Washington campus. It is run by the university and is very convenient for students on a dining plan. The store offers lots of interesting things, including ready made items, limited canned goods, basic cleaning supplies, pharmacy items, and a small coffee shop called the Husky Grind with vegan friendly options. The deli has tasty food, like smoked gouda mac and cheese. Employees are extremely helpful, friendly, and amazing people. However, the market is also described as understocked, with many barren shelves. The kitchen area appeared barren during lunch with no menu. The primary criticism is that items are greatly overpriced, ridiculously overpriced, a bit high, and very expensive, with specific examples given. The line around noon can get quite long. Some note that the security guard may glare at or follow non-white individuals. For anyone other than students using dining funds, it is considered too spendy and only okay if you need something in a pinch.
It is hands down the most expensive place to get groceries in U District. Expect a crazy markup on everything. If you’re new to UW, just take the bus to almost any other grocery store and you’ll pay half price.
