Overall similar to a gym at a big hotel
Limited equipment, quality of equipment is mid grade i.e. light to medium light duty benches with minimal adjustments machines are similar light to medium light duty with minimal adjustability . Just two sets of free weights cardio machines are ok nothing here is premium. Not big gets crowded. Owners and staff are nice, just a small gym.

Having been a member of numerous gyms in the last 20 years, I'd say UP is one of my favorites! I'm a solo exerciser and I love the self-service arrangement here. No front desk or personal trainers to interrupt your workouts, just come and go as you please. It also means there are cameras everywhere, which makes me feel safer AND the gym is open 365 days a year.
There is plenty of cardio equipment and machines for weight training. At peak hours, you may have to wait for a treadmill, as with almost any gym. Be aware that there are no locker rooms or showers, but I live nearby so that's not an issue for me.
The owners/management are very responsive, and any time I've had an email with questions or concerns, they respond right away.

Overall a quality, clean gym.
The good: Clean and well organized at all times. Has all the basics of what you'd want.
The bad: It's small. No locker room, just cubbies. No shower. At peak times, there's pretty much always an old person camped out on the machine you want for 10 minutes. Stretching space is limited, but they are using the small space as best they can. The material of the stretching areas is a HUGE issue. It's cheap astroturf fake grass. Mats and shoes slide on this surface, which could easily lead to an injury; it's entirely inappropriate for a gym setting.

Would highly recommend this gym. Never packed but can be busy. People are friendly but stick to themselves. All types of people not just gym bros go here so its really not intimidating. Only feedback for UP is to get rid of some ellipticals and add more stair climbers!

This gym has everything I ever need, and there's never a wait for equipment. Ownership is good people. If one of the locations is in your area, you could do much worse.

Really loving the gym! Has everything you need, good bathroom, people have been very chill. Mostly people stick to themselves. Easy to find parking around the area. And the owner includes some excellent dad jokes on the board at the front!

I was a member for a few months back in 2022 and I had a very positive experience. Super easy to sign up and cancel. The gym is small but has everything that you need. Never crowded and super clean (I saw the owner cleaning the equipment a couple times). Much better experience than any other big box gyms.

If I ever stop smoking cigarettes long enough to step foot in a gym this would be my first choice !!

One of the only great gyms in Beacon Hill. It has all the essential equipment you would expect at a gym with some extras. It's clean, organized and very easy to access. They play a nice variety of music at a relatively low volume (so you can still listen to your own without issue). Highly recommend!

Urban playground is an oasis amongst a gym desert. I tried out 4 other gyms in Seattle and none came close to the quality of Urban Playground. The dumbbells are great, the equipment and facility is always clean and organized, and the community is really friendly. I never have to wait for equipment or treadmills, so I’m always in and out really quick. 10/10 gym

Wonderful local gym with all amenities. Only thing I may have liked was a rowing machine. I am new to gyms and got a trainer from the gym (Tybald) who I had six sessions with and was excellent and taught me the basics of strength training. Not intimidating at all, people of all ages and levels. A great and welcome experience.

Small private gym, very clean! There's towels and disinfectant bottles all over the gym. The gym also provides towels for members to use. It doesn't have a sauna or showers because it's a neighborhood gym, most people live in the area. I liked that this gym was never crowded, pretty quiet, everybody's in their zone. You can find almost (!) all gym equipment here except for the calf raise machine, leg extension, or hack squat. There's only one stairmaster When I do cardio on the stairmaster, I usually do so for about 25-30 minutes so this could be an issue if more than one person wants to use it. I do like that there are two squat racks with a platform for deadlifts. There are not enough 45lb plates however. There are only (4) 45lb plates for the leg press (2 for each side max). I had to take the two plates from the bench press and two more from one of the squat racks. This could be an issue as well if there is someone using the bench and squat rack at the same time. You wouldn't be able to do more on the leg press. So that brings me to who this gym might be a good fit for? This gym is good if you're just looking to stay healthy and want to tone at the gym. This gym might not be a good fit if you're wanting to lift heavier. Individual monthly membership is $70 - is it worth the price? Eh, I guess so. It's convenient.
