Their groomer added a restriction without telling me because my dog was afraid of the blow dryer. Now I have to call the store and plead my case to schedule an appointment. It was the short fat curly brunette.

We came in looking for a male parakeet. At home, we have two females housed separately—our older female is territorial and bullies any bird near her, even during shared flight time. She prefers solitude. Our younger female is timid but extremely social and needs companionship. A male pairing is ideal, as male budgies are playful, social, and not territorial—opposite of many species.
Unfortunately, our experience at this Petco was disappointing. It started with two associates arguing—one said bird handling wasn’t their job. The woman, Evie, who eventually helped us was rushed and rough, visibly stressing the birds. We didn’t intervene because we just wanted our bird home safely. For the record: birds should always be handled slowly. You don’t need to chase them. Ours learned to “step up” within hours. Slow movements and calm energy go a long way.
Worse than the handling was the passive-aggressive misinformation. She questioned the sex of our home birds and dismissed cere sexing, saying budgies can “mimic” gender. While behavior can vary, cere color and texture is hormone-driven and reliable. Males typically have bright blue, smooth ceres; females have white, tan, or crusty brown ones. In color mutations like recessive pieds, males may have purplish-pink ceres—but smooth and even. Females develop pale blue ceres with white rings that eventually become crusty tan. This is where confusion can happen—but it’s clear to anyone familiar with budgies.
She even claimed a crusty brown cere wasn’t proof of a female, which is medically impossible in a healthy male. A brown cere on a male would indicate a serious hormonal or liver issue, and still wouldn’t resemble a healthy female cere.
She also shared a story about a “male” laying eggs as proof cere sexing is unreliable. But laying eggs is definitive proof the bird was mis-sexed—common in stores due to inexperienced handling, not a flaw in cere sexing.
When we tried to clarify, she cited a “vet friend” as her source, but her information was clearly incorrect and outdated. She was dismissive, abrasive, and unwilling to hear facts, even from experienced bird owners.
We didn’t argue—we just wanted our bird. But it’s frustrating to see such poor handling and misinformation from staff selling live animals. It’s especially ironic considering Petco keeps 20+ budgies of both sexes in a space smaller than what one budgie requires.
Please train your staff in proper avian care. These are intelligent, sensitive animals—not merchandise.

This has to be one of the worst Petco in Tacoma. Staff are extremely rude and when brought to the manager’s attention (Evie) she took no responsibility for her staff’s inappropriate behavior and offered no type of apology. Terrible customer service!

We are so lucky to live near a great Petco. We have to use the Grooming services for over 10 years with a fussy doodle dog and they are always amazing. I find scheduling to be most helpful on the phone.

Completed an online order for and email said it was completed to pick up when I arrive I got an email stated that my order was out of stock when I brought it up to the cashier he said someone probably hit completed on accident . He grabbed someone who came up didn’t apologize for the convenience nothing when I grab a similar product same size same brand they made me repurchase and I’m have to wait for a refund for my online order . When I told the lady that the guys said someone hit the wrong button he jumped up and stated he never said that trying to make it look like I was lying . This was a major inconvenience . I shop her at least twice a month spending over $75 each time and I am taking my business somewhere else . The staff is unprofessional and rude .

Petco caters to all pets, yet our dog friends are the clear winners. We have 3 dogs and 2 kittens, and everything you need for dogs is there. Blue Mountain kitten treats are our boys' favorites, and I couldn't find them there ! They have them for puppies at this Petco ! Frustrated !

Petco is great. Like any other Petco. A little pricey, but also not near as pricey as some of the "whole foods" type of pet shops.

I was racially profiled at this establishment
As soon as the woman saw me she stopped doing what she was doing to follow me throughout the entire store and not once tried to assist me. She called the security guards to the store and I was just there to simply purchase food for my beloved pets. Most uncomfortable situation and feeling.

Came into this store to browse, found a reptile tank with a half off promotion on it and reptiles, went to buy, store did not honor the promotion. They said the promo time period had passed. Not my fault that your associates didn't remove the promotional materials. I spend quite a bit of money at pet stores, I will not be returning to this location and I will be contacting their corporate offices for the region to report this directly.

Always helpful, the dog trainer helped me pick the right harness, the correct size and even adjusted it to fit my dog perfectly.
