VCA Sand Lake Animal Hospital
1480 Sand Lake Road, OnalaskaI’m giving the VCA 4 stars because my initial appointment with them went great. Dr. Hansen and the tech that assisted him on my first visit spent time with my very obviously anxious dog, they gave her treats and made her as comfortable as possible to receive multiple vaccinations and her assessment. Today, on my dogs second visit to get the rest of her vaccines there were two techs that assisted as it was a tech only appointment. I don’t know their names. They took no time to ensure that the dog was comfortable or somewhat relaxed for the vaccines, where they instead picked up the chair she was hiding under and moved it so that they could corner her to administer her vaccines. Her initial appointment was the complete opposite, where the Dr and the tech were able to give her the vaccines without any issue of hiding because they took their time to alleviate some anxiety. While this may come across as “nitpicking”, I know I’m certainly not the only person who expects a professional, and courteous experience, for the prices we as people pay to have our loved ones taken care of. My suggestion is to give the techs more training on how to handle anxious animals. I understand that we can get busy at work, but your patients shouldn’t have to reap those consequences.

Coulee Region Humane Society
911 Critter Ct, OnalaskaSince Covid, the pet adoption process through many humane societies seems to be more challenging. Several local organizations no longer offer open hours to meet adoptable animals, and even after submitting multiple applications for different kittens at different shelters, responses were slow. We instantly fell in love with pictures of kitten Enid (now Mazzy) at the Coulee Region Humane Society and submitted an application. They called the next day with some follow-up questions and information, and we were approved. I really appreciated that they spayed her before pickup—one less thing to worry about. They also required a vet visit within the first 30 days, which is something we would have done regardless.
Everyone I interacted with was friendly and helpful. A special shout out to Office Operations Manager Megan, who went above and beyond throughout the process. We live 1.5 hours away and rescheduled once due to weather, but they were incredibly accommodating. Because we hadn’t met Mazzy beforehand, we weren’t entirely sure what to expect, but the description on her adoption page was spot-on—she’s a total cuddlebug and absolutely purrfect. I highly recommend working with the Coulee Region Humane Society when you’re looking for your next pet.
