For those of you who are enamored with the western tide of settlers who set out on that perilous journey in the 1800s in covered wagons, this is a must see! I must have passed by this place 10 times, heading north on I-25, before I finally hit that exit and made the side trip to see it. I’m so glad I did! What a cool way to step back in time! Also see register cliff while you are here!

Our family of seven (4 generations) from Texas stopped by the Oregon Rut Trails after a gentleman at the Wheatland Visitor Center made a suggestion to stop there. We are so glad he made the suggestion, such a neat place with so much history!! Our grandsons are homeschooling for the first time this year and my daughter will be incorporating this stop into their History lessons!! I cannot even begin to imagine traveling this area in covered wagons and then to think they had to cross the North Platte River..makes a person really appreciate what we have in our modern world today!! I would definitely recommend the Oregon Trail Ruts site to anyone!!

Walk the short paved trail to stand in some of the deepest and most well defined ruts on the trail. This is the most awe-inspring section of the ruts I've seen. This is another short stop (30min for us) nearby to Register Cliff and Guernsey State Park.

So cool to see the actual trail marks of so many wagons that passed through this area. I can't even imagine what it would be like to try and pull a wagon through so much mud. Now it is no longer mud since it is not used anymore. To actually see this in person is something not to miss. The parking lot is great and the trail signs are very informative.

Not a high glamour stop, but historically interesting. Definitely not crowded. Interesting visual to think about and compare the 1800s settlers, iron wheels, no suspension, heat and bugs with our current cars that insulate us for the environment.

Ok, this was much more interesting than I thought it would be. I do love history and I’ve heard of the Oregon Trail ruts before, butI had no idea these were so pronounced where you could see the the indentation of thousands of wagons that made there way over these rocks. All I can say is that I hope they had good cushions to sit on because that much have been pretty bumpy! It is back a gravel road, but we took our rental sports car back there with no problem. Not sure what that would be like in wet conditions though. There are two sets of ruts, the main set at the top of the rocks and another one on the way down, so walk the entire loop.

Cool piece of actual history. (Yes, that's a knock on Register Cliff.) There's a paved walkway all the way around for you to check out evidence of ruts beyond the main area.

Really glad I took the time to visit this site. Ruts are just outside of town and at the top of a hill. The ruts were surprisingly deep and narrower than I expected. There are informational signs on the path up with information about life during that time period. Really helps you to give a greater understanding about how rough traveling was and how dedicated they were.
