“I always enjoy shopping at Flax, today was better than ever. I met Jane Andreasen, an amazing woman who manages the pens and pencil department. I happened to have pictures of each pen in my collection that needed refills. She immediately recognized each brand and model and knew the history of all of my pens, some 40 years old. Of course I purchased each refill she recommended and then began to look into other products she liked. We spent the most pleasant hour at her counter. I learned more about pens, ink and pencils than being an architect for 50 years.
If I were wealthy, I would buy this woman a store of her own to share her passion with the public. Thank you Flax, for having Jane manage a part of your store.

“What great service! Especially for an online order. A different online retailer decide not to tell me that a key part of a birthday present for my wife, Nutscene Garden Twine, was back ordered, which I only discovered because it didn't ship after 4 or 5 days. Scrambling, I found Arch Art Supplies had some in stock. Unfortunately the color I chose was out of stock but instead of leaving me hanging Arch Art reached out directly to ask me if one of the other colors would be ok and then quickly got it shipped to me...with a couple of days left till the birthday! It was a small order but they went out of their way to provide great service....can't thank them enough...and can't wait to visit the shop in person.”

The staff at TKB are always ready and willing to help a newcomer with recipes and ideas for creating quality cosmetics, skin treatment and nail products! The mentors at TKB are always willing to help or answer any questions their customers may have. Pricing is fair and the quality of products sent by TKB only pales in comparison to the outstanding customer service give by Kaila and her team!”
“Lots of stuff to buy here, even kiln things, xiem and mudtools. Pigments and a ton of glaze and clay selections. A bit pricier than online, but it’s a local business and they help a lot with selection. Every now and then they’ll have deals and those prices will dip below online prices which is nice.
Only thing I wish is that their firing services were a bit more standardized. The same amount of bisque firing can cost $25 or $35 depending on who checks you out - about a 30% variability based on my experience. Your best shot at avoiding this is just filling a shelf or kiln as much as you can, so that there’s less of a guessing.
Never had anything broken, and they’ll always fire everything together and under 2 weeks. Never had anything stolen either. Can’t say the same about other firing services around east bay - so even if it’s a little more expensive, I don’t mind.”
“Dope shop with great selection of spray paint, caps and markers. Awesome shop tees and hoodies, usually stop in once a week. Great dude running the spot, super helpful if you have any questions about paint and great part of the neighborhood.”
“Wonderful place where you can find all the tinsel you may need. I was looking for the perfect kind of ribbon in a particular shade that needed to match a large piece of artwork. The store attendant was extremely helpful and managed to find just what I was looking for! If you’re looking for a community feeling where you can still talk to the attendant who will be able to help you with a smile then that’s the place for you.”
“Super cute and well-themed kids art store. There were a lot more general kids toys and stuff compared to specifically art or stationery items. The colors were also not up my alley but seemed great for children. It is in a cute plaza and the owner was sweet!”
“Great place to take a stained glass class! We took both the one day beginner and multi week intermediate classes and learned so much.The studio was super helpful with rescheduling our last class that we missed in March 2020 and super understanding when we needed to stay an extra few minutes past close to finish and clean up. We love our projects, especially the intermediate class ones where we were able to sketch our own patterns.”

“Please note that the brick and mortar location is no longer a gallery. The owner has moved the gallery contents to his apartment up the street, which can be viewed by appointment. I was lucky enough to call and catch him while he was in to view his amazing collection. I was thoroughly impressed by his array of strange objects and curios. I do wish that he would open a better website (most of the photos on the current website are inoperable) - something on Instagram, Chairish, or 1st Dibs would really expand his clientele and make it more accessible. *UPDATE: The website works better on a computer browser than on a cell phone!*”
“I've had several of my needlepoint canvases made into pillows and the finished products are just amazing. Their selection, service, prices and suggestions are top notch. And, so patient! I like to see as many options as reasonable and they were perfect at either letting me do my own exploring or listening to their suggestions. The quality of the work and the materials are far better than any place I have ever been (and I have been to a few). The prices are a fraction of what I've previously paid. And, the employees seemed to be happy which says a lot about the owner whom I found to be wonderful to work with.”
“Obsessed with Jim. It would be really easy to take advantage of people who don't know the first thing about niche furniture repair and crafts (ie. almost everyone). Instead of charging a fortune, Jim actually taught me how to repair the paper cord on my used Danish chairs myself and only charged me for the materials used. He is a learned & encouraging teacher - grateful for his expertise and the opportunity to learn a new skill!”
“An artist’s paradise. Paints, brushes, markers, pastels, canvas and frames. The custom frames section is very helpful for finding the right products for your artwork. I was very fortunate to find the right sized frame in their inventory. Their gift section is filled with interesting souvenirs and stickers.”
