Phoebe's is the kind of place you hope to stumble on while vacationing. Located right near the white sand dunes and deep blue Pacific Ocean views of Asilomar beach, the café is tucked away in a corner of Hearst Social Hall at Asilomar Conference Grounds, which features pool tables, a gift shop and a huge stone fireplace. The grounds themselves are rich in history and lore; just drive through the gates on Asilomar Drive and find a parking spot. The menu is short and simple: the artichoke is straight from Castroville's fields and served with Meyer lemon aïoli; the heirloom tomato panino comes with a whole-grain salad; and the muffaletta --- though not so local --- is satisfying. The soup of the day is best enjoyed on the patio with some local wine or beer. Post-meal, take a walk on the boardwalk over the dunes. Did we mention the sunset views nightly?
