“Grateful for the work everyone here does. I was introduced to the org through Hurricane Melissa relief for Jamaica efforts. My mom volunteered there and had great things to say. I was also able to drop off a donation of diapers, toiletries and hygienic products. Thank you!”
“Have an awesome opportunity to meet a group of people that are really changing things for the community especially our youth thank you for allowing me the opportunity to volunteer and help make this site even better.”
“The Coconut Creek Community Center is one of the best parts of living in Coconut Creek. We even have two centers. This is the one in the south end of the city. The first community center in the city was the Rowe Community Center. it was much smaller and no longer met the needs of the growing city so this center was built in 2004. The building is two stories and is very beautiful and well maintained.
The first floor of the center holds the reception desk, offices, meeting rooms, the senior center, bathrooms and a gymnasium. There is a large reception room with an attached kitchen. I rented it one year for my daughter's birthday party. It is also used for community meetings and voting. You can find all of the notices of upcoming events tacked to the bulletin board opposite the reception desk.
The second floor contains more meeting rooms and a game room that can be used by the public.
The community center hosts many events for the residents of the city for all ages. There are programs for kids, activities for seniors, sports teams, and classes. They hold a day camp every summer, after school programs, and provide child care to help parents when school is out. My daughter took dance classes, art classes, and attended many of the children's programs through the years. Later on she earned volunteer hours for high school by volunteering at the recreation programs. The recreation department does an incredible job of creating programs for the city. Everything they present is free or with a reasonable fee. People from outside the city can attend the programs put they have to pay extra to do so.
Outside the community center is a large park that contains two playgrounds and a newly refurbished basketball court. On any given night you will see families and kids riding bikes, playing basketball, and enjoying the playgrounds. There is a lake that separates the community center from Windmill Park. Once Windmill Park is reopened it will be a nice walk between the community center and the park that is getting a major make over. Outside there is also a band shell that hosts free concerts usually once a month and movies outside. On the East side of the property there is picturesque bridge that leads from the community center to the brand new fire station.
Through the years I have attended a lot of the community center programs. I have voted here and celebrated here. I have also made friends with the recreation staff who are some of the nicest people I know. The residents of Coconut Creek are fortunate to have such a great recreation staff and a beautiful building that houses all they have to offer.”
“Such a great experience! I had the pleasure and opportunity to volunteer for my child's filth grade field trip to @jasouthflorida. It was so fun to see the kids experience real life work from working to getting paid and going to the bank and budgeting to have enough money for snacks and treats to take back home. This program is run by volunteers and donations. I really enjoyed it and recommend to participate and volunteer if you can. Definitely provide a quality of service to the community. Huge learning value for everyone involved.”
“The Foundation for Independent Living is an amazing place. I looked all over the USA and even overseas. My son is unique as are all people. He is bright intelligent but due to an T I (traumatic brain injury) he has need of assistance in things in his life. We found FIL through a friend who knew someone who had been a resident. My son first came for a few days to see what he thought. Then did an overnight. He was very wary of being in an apartment on his own. He thought socially it would be a challenge as he was afraid he would isolate. NO WAY. He loves everything. He is active all day and many evenings as well. He loves the food, and the staff are fabulous. He does personal training 2xs a week They are constantly going on outing. He’s very proud of the growth he has had living in his own apartment with his own washer and dryer. He has an ILC (independent living coach). Who checks in with him in his apartment about 3 times a week. Makes sure he is cleaning and taking care of his responsibilities. As my son said He has found a home and plans on staying there for years to come.”
“If you have an unique kiddo that is having trouble fitting in and or enjoying success at “regular schools”(typical Jewish Day School or public school) for whatever reason, this school could be a very good match.
SFJA provides a unique opportunity for kids and their parents to access an education where students are treated as a “whole child.” Traditional academics are addressed. What makes SFJA so special is its dynamic accommodation to aspects of social, emotional/psychological, and most importantly, religious/spiritual learning.
A perfect school for a child(ren) who doesn't conform easily, is bright but yet struggles in typical academic only school(s). Especially if the atypicality is due to subtle or less distinct challenges/issues and or the child having an unconventional learning style. NOT a “Special Ed” school but rather an alternative environment that fosters success for students that struggle with more traditional settings.
My favorite story to tell is that before we found this wonderful school for both of our ADHD and twice exceptional (2E) kiddos, we lived in a state that does not offer many untraditional options, let alone options for a Jewish Education. Our kids were struggling in public schools. The IEP team in Public INSISTED we DRUG our children into “submission.” We were led to think that we/our children were the problem. I am VERY happy to announce that our children are 100% drug-free and enjoy a great deal of success at SFJA.
Parent/Teacher/Admin meetings have gone from being a “war zone” to a “war room” where maximizing our children’s potential is explored. Our 13 yr old daughter is “popular” and has friends and our 12 yr old son has taken a big interest in robotics. SFJA even won a trophy at the last Robotics competition for “Best Score.”
Highly recommend.”
“Did a drive past through the park to check out. We plan to visit in the future. Took pictures of the beautiful horses from a newly constructed parking lot near the Atlantic Tradewinds railroad ride.”
