“A Divine Delight at The Blue Mantle!
In St. Augustine's streets, a gem does reside,
The Blue Mantle calls, with its doors open wide.
A store full of treasures for soul and for heart,
Where religious goods shine like a fine work of art.
Step in and you'll find a serene, holy glow,
With items that nurture and help spirits grow.
From candles to crosses, and rosaries rare,
Each piece is a symbol of love and of prayer.
Books filled with wisdom and tales of the past,
Stories that guide us, with lessons that last.
For seekers of peace, and those on a quest,
The Blue Mantle offers a haven, so blessed.
Adorn your home with gifts full of grace,
In this sacred emporium, a welcoming space.
The staff with their knowledge, kind and sincere,
Are there to assist, and to bring you good cheer.
So wander through aisles of faith and of hope,
And discover the beauty that helps the soul cope.
In St. Augustine's heart, let your spirit dance,
At The Blue Mantle, where faith finds a chance.
Whether you're gifting or seeking your own,
The Blue Mantle's magic will make your heart grown.
For treasures divine to make your soul whole,
Visit this jewel and embrace its bright role!”
“Sales staff excellent and gracious-so helpful! Melissa searched and searched for a hard-to-find title for me and had nearly given up finding it. I had finally left store when she eventually located it and raced outside to find me to tell me! ♥️ Yea Melissa!”
“"As I stepped through the imposing gates of Castillo de San Marcos, I was instantly transported back in time. The ancient coquina walls whispered tales of battles fought and lives lived within its sturdy embrace. Walking along the ramparts, I marveled at the breathtaking views of the Matanzas Bay, imagining the ships that once sailed these waters. Inside the fort, the cool, dimly lit chambers echoed with the footsteps of centuries past. I traced my fingers along the weathered cannons, imagining the thunderous roar of gunfire that once filled the air. Exploring the maze-like corridors, I discovered exhibits detailing the fort's rich history, from its construction in the 17th century to its role in protecting the Spanish empire. As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a golden glow over the ancient walls, I felt a deep sense of reverence for this remarkable monument to America's past."”
“We always love sitting in the coffee shop in Barnes and Noble, flipping through our favorite magazines, deciding which to buy! We have a coffee and a snack too! Browsing through the store is always a delight! Having 11, going on 12 grandchildren, I find they have the best toys!”
“We were in town for a long weekend; while looking through the "St. Augustine Sightseeing Map & Guide"
an ad for the Second Read Bookstore on Page 28 caught my eye. Who doesn't love a good bookstore that sells gently used books at discounted prices? The location couldn't be better - behind Flagler College - on Cordova Street in the heart of the historic district where parking is a premium at $20-$25. We felt lucky to walk from our VRBO.
We were greeted by engaging co-owner, Susan, who told us that the shop has been in business for 30 years. I can see why people gravitate to this small, intimate eclectic gem. To accommodate customers, Susan or her partner, Evelyn, will hold purchases while customers enjoy the city. Their hours cannot be matched: Second Read Books is open seven days a week: Monday - Thursday from 10-7 Friday - Sunday from 10-8. The sightseeing guide and map show the shop closed on Wednesdays which it was during Covid.
The books are in marvelous condition. I bought a brand new Marie Benedict paperback for $7.95; it retails for $16.99. Susan said she buys books from places like Goodwill, Habitat for Humanity and humane societies which gives back to those organizations while offering quality books for her customers. Win-win.
The shop has kind of a treasure hunt feel. The books are organized by topic: Poetry, General Fiction, Florida Authors, Children, Spiritual, Classics, DVDs, Romance, Christmas, etc. While not strictly alphabetized, the books are displayed horizontally and vertically in short stacks; the fun is craning your neck to find a title for your next read. By the looks of the bags of books waiting for pickup, the shop enjoys a great following.
Second Read Books even offers a credit system. If a patron donates a book to the shop, a credit is given to apply toward a future purchase. It was so cool to see the credit system on a Rolodex. Credit cards are accepted; cash is welcomed to help with those pesky credit card fees, especially for a small business like Second Read Books.
The shop has such a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. As we left, Susan reminded us to stay hydrated in the San Augustine heat. Second Read Books is one of those hidden gems you wish you could find in every town. Be sure to stop in on your next visit.”
