“Earth angels became a real thing for me the day I walked into the Zephyrhills Lions Club. I had surrendered my driver's license a few days earlier because cataracts in both eyes left me unable to pass the vision test. Cataract surgery was out the question. Totally impossible, I thought, because of the expense. I had no money and no insurance, and so at age 73, I thought I was done driving forever.

Then came the unexpected. My brother, Darrell, heard from a friend that the Zephyrhills Lions Club sought to help people exactly in my position: unable to see and unable to afford help. The Club had one sign-up day each month, we learned, and that day happened to be the very next morning. The impossible suddenly became a small but exciting hope.

At the Lions Club the next morning I met my Earth angels, Christine Malone, Zephyrhills Lions Club President, and her bevy of volunteers. It was true, these ladies kindly assured me, the Lions Club Sight Program existed to help people like me. They led me promptly and painlessly through the sign-up process, then scheduled me on the spot for my first appointment for an eye exam at the Eye Clinic of Florida. Yes, it was that easy. I walked away a happy man.

Numerous visits to The Eye Clinic followed, spanning a period of about four months, during which I underwent two cataract surgeries, one for each eye. Much help during that period came from Lou Cantrell, also of the Lions Club. My special thanks to you, Lou, for always making the sure the ball was kept rolling.

Special thanks also to Lions Club International and to Christine Malone of the Zephyrhills chapter for getting me started. My vision is now 20/20, and I have in my wallet a shiny new license making it legal for me to drive. Thanks to the financial help of the Lions Club and the surgical skills of the well-deserving Dr. Ahad Mahootchi and team at The Eye Clinic of Florida (for whom I've written a separate review) my world is brighter and my outlook much expanded. And let's not forget my brother Darrell, whose gift of gab led me to the Lion Club door. I am forever indebted to you all.”
