“So there I was… buckle up, this is going to be a long one.
We were headed to Yellowstone from the Tri-Cities, Washington, when the transmission started acting up. I was Googling symptoms on the fly and trying to use AI to figure it out. The transmission was locking in 4th. From the research I did, I thought it was the shift sensor. By the time I got to Missoula I was driving in manual mode. I made it to West Yellowstone knowing it was a five-day trip, I still had to get home, and I needed the truck to get around the park.
I decided to change the part in the campground driveway. After stopping to pick up the part and fluid, I dropped the pan and followed video instructions my brother was sending me. While I was taking things apart, I couldn’t get the valve body to separate cleanly. I reached for my phone, and as I did, it gave way and ripped the wiring harness out of the transmission. I cut myself trying to catch it. One of those trips you never forget.
I called my uncle in Ennis, Montana. He told me to take it to Western Transmission. After I talked with Corey, he said, “Oh yeah, no problem. I should be able to get that fixed up for you.” That was mind-boggling, because this was the week before Memorial Day weekend. Corey said to get it to him. I had a free tow, so I called it in and told him we’d be there in a couple of hours.
I picked up a rental car, went over, and talked to Corey and one of the technicians. The technician was obviously annoyed that I’d tried to fix a transmission in a parking lot, which is understandable. I was that customer—the kind I didn’t like dealing with when I was in the business. He got the story, told me he’d look into it, and said there were a few vehicles ahead of me.
They pulled it apart and put it back together with the part I asked them to change, even though the technician recommended against it. The customer is always right… me. He put it back together, took it for a drive, and it didn’t fix the problem, just like he’d said it probably wouldn’t. They did the actual diagnosis and found that the TCM was out. After getting it back together, they called and said they could get one, but it wouldn’t be there until Saturday and they were really expensive. He said he’d get back to me after looking around.
This was Thursday morning, and we needed to be out of the campground Friday morning. I didn’t hear back for a few hours. I was up on the mountain using Starlink, desperate at that point. He called while we were having lunch in West Yellowstone and said he’d found a TCM locally at a junkyard, installed it, drove it, and everything worked. He could get us out that Thursday instead of leaving us stuck in West Yellowstone for the weekend. We got out of town after he worked miracles. He got us out in less than 4 days for what I would consider a very reasonable price.
Fast-forward a couple of months. I’m headed to the coast, I get a transmission code again, I scan it, and I call him. We find out the part the customer requested—me—had gone bad in less than a thousand miles. He recommended a local shop. That shop told me it wasn’t a big deal, that their price would be way too high, and that I should do it myself. So I did. It wasn’t that difficult on my own lift with no timeline, which saved me $1,000, and I was able to change other parts after finding issues in the shift linkage and shifter.
All this to say: I have not dealt with a shop with as much integrity and professionalism as Western Transmission. Dealing with Corey and his coworkers was excellent. I wish they were in the Tri-Cities, but if I have real transmission problems, I will ship my vehicle to him to have it fixed.”
