when your flight gets cancelled and you have to drive to a different airport 250 miles away to get where you need to go, your rental car company should not ding you even further by charging you an extra $500. Well that’s what Avis did. My rental went from $396 for 3 days to $1,106 for 4 days, never again.

After getting keys to rental I went to lot and saw the vehicle had serious large dents and scratches clear to metal. I went back in to report issue and was told to just take pictures in case they want to charge me for them. WHAT?? Then car was not full of gas. WHAT? When I returned the car there was nobody in the car lot and nobody inside the Avis/Budget booth. WHAT? It was frustrating and scary experience.

We booked a one way rental. There was nobody manning the preferred desk at the DSM airport so pick up took way longer than necessary. We returned our car at 4:10a “after hours” before hopping on a flight at MCI airport. We were notified several days later that we failed to return our vehicle which was not the case. We had to use international rates to call Avis to notify them of their error. Several days later I’m still getting receipts for amounts way higher than the agreed upon rental amount. Once we return from Europe I’m sure we’ll have a fight on our hands to fix Avis’s unexplainable mess. I don’t understand how a vehicle goes missing in a secured airport drop zone. Somebody didn’t do their job and it’s costing me time and money which is unacceptable.

Very quick service with Avis Preferred.Shuttle driver refused to drop us off on the East side of the terminal, which is where we always get dropped off for our SWA flights. Very strange guy.

The Avis agency at the Des Moines airport charged me for an extra day, even though I return the vehicle early per my rental agreement. The personnel did not check my car in when I returned the vehicle, so how would you feel if you were charged an extra day?

Second time renting, both times not the right vehicle as reserved. This time i was also charged a late fee when i only had the car 15 hours. Then was given a credit , that is great, but told I could not comment or speak to anyone on the matter. Poor customer service by the company leaves a bad taste in ones mouth. Time to move back to Enterprise

Horrible experience. I’ve never rented a vehicle that was given to me in such poor condition. No windshield wiper fluid, filthy inside and out, reeked of weed and cigarettes half tank of gas. I’ll never rent from them again.

Hidden costs, terrible customer service, and above all broken cars. Stay as far away as possible from renting here. Rented a car on December 26th and get 40 miles down the road when the tire light indicator came on. Called customer service and they wanted to charge an additional fee to have someone come out and change the tire. Reluctantly, I agreed. Waited on the side of the road for 40 minutes and called the tow service. They estimated it would be 3 hours before they could get out there. Cancelled the tow and limped the car from gas station to gas station until I arrived at my destination. Took the car to a tire shop and they could not find a leak but replaced the stem and cleaned the bearings. The problem still persisted. Had to exchange the vehicle the next day. By the way, there are no close Avis locations in Iowa! When the vehicle was returned, was surprised at an additional $800 charge. They never checked the vehicle in! When they finally did check the vehicle in, charged for a full tank of gas (was returned full) on top of other miscellaneous fees that amounted to $200 on top of the $409 I prepaid. It was a hassle going through customer service to get them to check their own vehicle in and refund the fuel fee. The issue with the tire is still unresolved and they offered 1 day off the rental, $78 for a 5 day rental that cost $550 and had issues for 2.5 of the days of the rental. Save your time and money and go elsewhere.

My 4-wheel drive reserved vehicle was subbed-out for a 2-wheel drive vehicle. The young person renting out the truck did not inform us of any downgrade which is on them when you are getting an inferior product from which you paid for. It was part of our contract to have a 4-wheel vehicle to even rent the VRBO we had in Dillon Colorado. When we got stuck and tried to put the truck in 4-wheel drive we discovered we didn't have it! We got no help from Avis's customer service other than to tell us to call around maybe we could find one at another Avis close by. The other CS employees told us it was our fault by not knowing we had a 2-wheel drive. Of course, there was no other 4-wheel vehicles available in the area. We lost over a half day of vacation trying to fix the problem. I will not rent from Avis again after seeing how their customer service refused to do anything to remedy their mistake.

I've never been so disgusted with a company in my life. I rented a car online and prepaid for it with my chime banking account. Traveled an hour to get the car which cost me 100 dollars. Only to find out they don't take chime banking cards as a deposit and there was nothing they could do to help me since I only had chime banking. They wouldn't accept anyone else's card unless they were here in person. I am having an emergency in a state I don't know, and the person behind the desk couldn't even get up from her seat to help me.They had an attitude as if I was bothering them with my questions when I was asking for help. The supervisor rolled her eyes at me and acted as if I was bothering her. They then watched me bawl my eyes out and offered zero assistance. I explained to them that I was having a crisis far from home and needed help. I had several family members offer to help pay with an acceptable credit card but they refused. No where on their website did it state that they do not take chime banking cards. The worst part is they allowed me to pay the $255 on my chime banking card, and then tried to keep that money due to a short notice cancelation. Thankfully, after calling customer service and begging, they agreed to give me my money back.

This experience is limited to Des Moines,Iowa airport location. I made a booking for intermediate car thru my company's travel agent(CWT) and they had only 2 vehicles - both picj up trucks. I am not sure why they book cars uf they can't deliver them. Next time, I may think twice before going with AVIS.

To start, my reservation start time wasn't correct. I was flying into DSM and scheduled to land at midnight. I noticed that the rental counter closed at midnight, so I called several times to notify the agents of my arrival time and check to see if I'd be able to get the car.I called several times, with no answer. I left a message explaining the situation and didn't get a call back. Fortunately, when I arrived, there was an agent at the counter. I explained that while I was relieved she was there (so I could get the car), that the uncertainty caused me a lot of stress. She said that she saw my name come up on the phone display, but that as a matter of practice, they don't answer the phone. And she even joked that I was quite persistent.Terrible customer service.

I was given a car that was dangerously unsafe. The front tires were worse than bald - the steel belts were showing through one of the tires. Driving this car put me, the passenger, and perhaps others at great risk. This is particularly true at highway speed and, had it rained, I think a disaster for sure. Trying to resolve this was not easy. Ultimately I had to ride with a tow truck back to the rental location and therefore had to change (ruin) my travel plans for that day. I was given a safe car subsequently. What kind of rental company does not look at something as fundamental as tires!

People, watch your invoices with Avis, they will charge you Fuel Service when you bring it back full and also charge you the less than 75 mile service fee as well when you bring the car back full! They are very poor on Customer Service! I guess they know that most people will not view the receipt.... very poor way to run a car rental business!
