Stringtown Grocery is a long-time staple in the Kalona area, offering a bulk shopping experience. The store is very clean, with products nicely displayed and clearly organized. It features a vast selection of the best of many things, including jams, pickles, spices, herbs, extracts, candy, nuts, dried fruit, interesting teas, locally baked breads, cookies, pies, bulk natural peanut butter, fresh high quality olive oil, noodles, varied flours, myriad diverse beans, oatmeal, grits, and granola. There is a cooler area for meat, produce, cheese, and butter. Across the parking lot is a beautifully maintained gardening center with many plants for vegetable gardens and bedding flowers. The store has all sorts of seasonings, vitamins at a great bargain, salves, soaps, potions, remedies, a variety of natural leaf teas, and a ton of candy types, including throwbacks. It also sells bird seed, bird feeders, and an extensive variety of garden seeds. The produce is excellent quality and there are assorted cheeses. The staff is wonderful, friendly, helpful, sweet, educated, warm, inviting, well-adept, competent, and takes pride in their business. It is a fun place to go and a treasure, where you will probably leave with a bag of something. They have a great variety of pastas, spices, dried fruits, nuts, sweets, and honey. The fall mums are huge and reasonably priced, as is everything in the greenhouse and produce area. Please be aware that the store only takes cash or a check, so be prepared. There is also some road construction in the area.
