The Maine Maritime Museum is a must-visit attraction located on a 20-acre waterfront campus in historic Bath, Maine. Open year-round, the museum offers a variety of engaging experiences for visitors. From May to October, you can enjoy lighthouse cruises and sails aboard the Merrymeeting tour boat. The BIW Story trolley tour provides an exclusive look at modern-day shipbuilding for the US Navy. Explore the historic Percy & Small Shipyard, learn about lobstering, see a blacksmith at work, and watch boatbuilders in action. The museum is highly interactive, with plenty of hands-on activities for kids, including a Pirate Playship. Visitors praise the museum's knowledgeable staff and fascinating exhibits that bring maritime history to life. The outdoor displays are a particular highlight, though access may be limited during the winter months. The museum is also very kid-friendly, making it a great destination for families. While the river tour may not be the most special, the overall experience is highly recommended, with USA Today naming the Maine Maritime Museum the "Best Museum in Maine." With admission valid for two days, there's plenty of time to explore all the museum has to offer.
The staff were exceptional and friendly. I enjoyed the historical and interactive areas, but my favorite display was Chris Van Dusen's! My boys (age 3 and 6) also loved the scavenger hunt, which added another layer to the experience because they paid closer attention to the displays that weren't Chris Van Dusen's.
