About Fort Washington Park

Fort Washington Park is a historic fortress and a true hidden gem just south of the nation's capital. It features a drawbridge, tunnels, massive stone walls facing the Potomac River, and interesting historical buildings reminiscent of European style forts. The primary attraction is the historic masonry fort, where visitors can walk along the ramparts, explore various levels, and examine concrete artillery batteries. It offers a rare blend of historic exploration and peaceful outdoor recreation. The park is very large, clean, and well-maintained, providing a nice place to spend some quiet time. It is a great spot for history buffs and photographers, with a very beautiful sunset over the water. There is a cute little national park gift shop. The park is easy to get to and free of charge, though parking can sometimes be limited. It is a great spot to walk dogs on a leash. The fort can look super eerie, especially in the rain, but provides a really neat, hands-on experience of stepping back in time.
