About Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts
The Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts is the only building in the United States designed by Le Corbusier, making it an obligatory stop. It is a remarkable and meaningful building that stands out on a campus dominated by red brick. The building is buzzing with activity and feels perpetually alive. It features two large ramps that allow visitors to walk right up to the galleries at its core. Large windows allow people to peer into studios where students and faculty members are at work. It is the home of the Department of Art, Film, and Visual Studies and a public gallery. The building houses exciting exhibitions and work space. The exhibitions are thought-provoking, inclusive, and beautiful, and are free to the public during regular hours. It is a community center and a machine that creates opacities, now celebrating its 60th anniversary. The building itself is perhaps more meaningful than the exhibition, a pioneering work in modernist design with exposed concrete. It is a gem within Cambridge.

The building is buzzing with activity; Corbusier built a community center that feels perpetually alive. Finding the Carpenter Center is like discovering the gem within: the exhibition was thought-provoking, inclusive and beautiful. I recommend a visit as well as the fig sandwich next door at the museum Cafe.

Came here to visit a friend who is a professor. Got to see his office, the museum component, the cafe. What a lovely space to feel your Cretaceous juices flowing.
