“Exactly What You Want From a Roadside Convenience Store

While traveling through New Hampshire, we stopped at Notch Express, just off Route 3. With several motels in the surrounding area, this is exactly the kind of convenience store travelers depend on for gas, drinks, snacks and those inevitable grab bags of food between meals.

When I stop at a convenience store in a more remote area, there are really four things I pay attention to: cleanliness, freshness, prices and service.

Notch Express did well on all four.

First, the store was very clean. The aisles and service area were well maintained, and the store had a plentiful selection of snacks, drinks and other things you might want to grab for the road or take back to your motel.

Second is freshness. In a more remote location, I sometimes wonder how quickly inventory turns over and how long some of those snacks have been sitting on the shelves. Obviously I didn’t check the date on every bag in the store, but I randomly checked several items and everything I looked at was current and well within date.

Then there’s price. A captive audience in a tourist or wilderness area can sometimes mean paying a considerable convenience premium.

Not here.

I found the prices quite reasonable and didn’t feel like we were paying some sort of “Northern Wilderness Premium” simply because of the location.

Finally, the person working the counter was friendly and welcoming, which always makes a quick stop a little better.

Clean store, fresh inventory, good selection, reasonable prices and friendly service. If you’re staying nearby or traveling Route 3 and need to stock up for the road, Notch Express is an easy recommendation.”
