“A Hidden Gem Along the River in a charming city.Nestled in the heart of Exeter, New Hampshire, Water Street Bookstore is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered by book lovers and travelers alike.During a recent road trip, I stumbled upon this quaint bookstore, and I couldn't have been more delighted with my find. From the moment I stepped inside, I was greeted by the warm smiles of the staff, who were not only friendly but also incredibly knowledgeable and eager to assist, making my browsing experience all the more enjoyable. The book selection is perfect and curated with care, ensuring that every title is worthy of attention (leaving here and there some little cards with book reviews by the staff members). The real highlight lies at the back of the store, where a vast window overlooks the river flowing by. As I perused the shelves, I found myself drawn to this serene spot, where people go to read their book and sip a coffee or leave a message in notebooks left there for our convenience.I will sure come back!”
“The most precious little shop I’ve ever seen. It is intimate and cozy. Quite literally packed floor to ceiling with books. It is an experience. We had done no research prior to our visit and were pleasantly surprised by a visit from the owner’s beautiful cat. It was our first trip to Portsmouth and I can’t wait to come back simply to stop in this store again. I snagged a signed copy of a book I’d been eyeing. Truly a must see on any trip to Portsmouth or the surrounding area!”
“Perfect atmosphere!! Coffee is amazing and the service is above and beyond! I’m so impressed and the book selection is curated amazingly. I’m in love and will be coming back 10/10”
“It’s an excellent store! The owners are such gems: kind, warm, and very helpful! I love the selection of toys and books. My daughters have also loved getting to meet authors during their events.”
“Quaint little ? bookstore with a section for teens and children. Old fashion typewriters are for sale and the owner even will repair old typewriters. I heard that typewriters are making a comeback so if you plan on being a ?''Paperback Writer ", this bookstore will be a great ? place to start! Beatle's music was playing when I visited. The man who was working the day I visited was very friendly and helpful. We talked about the history of the weather ☁️ of Portsmouth.”
“This place is a hidden treasure trove. If you love history and old books, this place is fantastic. Most of it are books on military history, but there’s a lot of books on local history, old fiction novels, and biographies of historical figures. The owner is incredibly friendlyand Knowledgeable.”

“I just love this place and won’t take my framing jobs anywhere else. The owner is so knowledgeable, not just about framing, but about preservation, mediums, (inks, paints, printing methods, etc) but also about random things (I had a circus poster from the 1940s framed and he knew so much about circus history!) that it makes him a pleasure to talk to. I haven’t stumped him yet with my many questions. He obviously is an avid reader with a great love of books, as they also sell lovely old books and prints. Experienced framers that you can trust with valuable items seem few and far between in these days of DIY and big chain stores, but I’ve had Michael’s ruin a precious (though not valuable) painting by my nephew. If you value your items, have them framed here.”

“I can’t believe I haven’t reviewed this yet. I love this Barnes and noble location. It’s on the larger side of your typical Barnes and noble store setup, and always has tons of things in stock. I don’t really have an independent bookstore near my home, so I come here at least once a month. Sometimes you just want to browse books and not deal with Amazon, you know what I mean?
They have a Starbucks inside with drinks and treats. There are tables set up to enjoy a new book and your Starbucks. The store is clean and well organized. The staff are always super nice and helpful. If you call ahead looking for something specific, they will hold it for you. There’s plenty of parking out front and Google maps takes you there without any issues. 5 stars all around
My pictures won’t load for some reason. I’ll take new ones next time I visit.”
