I have always loved Gramercy Typewriter - one of those unique “only in NYC” special places that everyone should visit. I bought a Royal O Typewriter from them six years ago which has brought me a lot of happiness. I recently came in to have it repaired and the service by Jay and team was above and beyond. Phenomenal place; highly recommend making a visit!

Got a typewriter here a year ago. Replaced the ink with a ribbon from Amazon and wasn't happy--it barely showed up when I typed! I went in expecting to be told it would be 2-3 days to complete. Jay, the owner, was there, and took a look at it for me. What an honor! He was so kind and so cool. Told me the ribbon wasn't good, and replaced it within 5 minutes. He also did a diagnosis and told me everything else was good to go. Amazing! Go here!! You won't be disappointed. Thanks, Jay!

What a gem!!! I absolutely love Gramercy Typewriter. As a typewriter enthusiast, this is THE place for servicing. They do an incredible job. You can tell the technicians are perfectionists. I have had multiple machines serviced. I especially appreciate their honesty—they will often provide several options (eg fixing up a platen vs replacing) with different costs so it’s partly in the customer’s control. They seem to do everything in their control to keep servicing costs down, which is extremely admirable. They also have gorgeous machines for sale; I might need to start bringing a mop with me so I can clean up my drool on the way out! Simply the best. Always a pleasure to see Jay, Hudson, and Nick.

An absolute treasure. Found a fantastic typewriter and they sat with me and explained all the differences for each model. They take their craft seriously and are a gift to the city!

The small storefront is curated with timeless, beautiful, pristine machines on wooden shelves along the left wall. On the right, there is an area for a typewriter to be brought down and used. Jay, one of the owners, is so passionate about his work. He wants to help each person find the best machine that not only fits their needs, but also their typing style. If you have questions he is available by email, very responsive, and I even received the most thorough voice message where he walked me through the problem I was having. I have saved that message... it is invaluable. His customer service is reminiscent of a world that has nearly disappeared. They do cleaning services, sell and respool ribbons.Go in and find the machine that is best for you. You won't regret it.

My father passed away in 2006 and I just recently decided to get his old typewriter examined and hoped it could be fixed. After a thorough evaluation, Jay told me that it has been heavily damaged and that he would be happy to make it look as best as he could but it cannot be restored to a working condition because of all of the years of unsuitable storage conditions and water damage. He told me that he can, however, restore it for display purposes. I was very happy to hear that because I could preserve it for the younger members of my family to see and know a little bit about my father.I was very appreciative of Jay's honesty. It was a very reassuring experience to have a business owner be completely upfront with what he can and cannot do.Going to this place is like going back to a beautiful and more humanely less transient past. I rediscovered the beauty of typewriters which, unlike our modern gadgets, don't need ever more frequent downloads to update the system. After a few weeks, I got my father's old typewriter. I took pictures of it and together with some pictures I took of the typewriters in the store, shared them with everyone in the family. I hope that will encourage them, especially the younger ones, to protect and treasure the past.Thank you Jay and more power to you and your staff.Samuel

This place is amazing with wonderful service!Jay helped me with my underwood champion which I had brought in to mainly fix the alignment. Later I was informed that working on said part risked further damage to the machine, and because it wasn’t resolved Jay waived the initial repair fee. That was so incredibly kind of him!!Not only was my typewriter cleaned with other repairs done, but he also took time to explain the parts, what was fixed, typing tips and answered any further questions I had.I hope gramercy typewriter remains here forever because it was such a pleasure and I wanna keep coming back for as long as I can ? Thank you again for all your help!

On April 20th, 2023, I stopped by to bring a Smith-Corona that was just given to me as a gift. Gramercy Typewriter inspected every detail of it including each and every letter, taught me how best to type on the machine (not all machines are created equal), and explained all the little details that make these kinds of typewriters special. When I offer to pay for the 20-min check-up and lesson, he didn't want to accept my money as no work had been performed on the machine. I was very touched and humbled, and my Smith-Corona works beautifully. Thank you for the best customer service I've encountered in a long time.

Nice people but they're absolutely deranged on pricing. They quoted me $450 to fix a drawband...

The two gentleman there were kind and helped with my new ribbon. I was so upset when I accidentally threw away the metal cores for my old Remington Ten Forty, but I remembered that I live in New York and we have everything here! And of course that would include a niche shop for manual typewriters. I’ll be going back when this ribbon dries out.
