“It's not very often that I get to go shopping in a store that's been opening it's doors continuously for 124 years, especially one that looks pretty much the same as it did in 1899 or as it did when was relocated in 1913 which was owned and operated by the same family until 2010. There was a short time that the store was closed in 2010 after the passing of the last remaining original family proprietor until the present owners reopened the doors in 2011 but that's like splitting hairs. Believe it or not they still carries staples like bread, butter and milk, but also other essential items for mountain life like local vegetables, jams, and honey to rakes, paint, plumbing and things that many people have never seen. The old original scales and carts can still be found scattered around the store amongst so many other things from the past that would be nearly impossible to find these days even if you have an Amazon Prime account. Although there has been some technology installed, the old cash register from 1913 still sits close by and is still operational if there is ever a need. So while Pace General still has thousands of traditional and contemporary items for sale, it's also a museum of mountain memories and memorabilia that will carry on this family legacy. If you really want a history lesson on the area spend a few hours here then drive around the area and see what living history looks like...”

“I go here a few times a year to have my CO2 tank filled. Staff is never able to confirm the grade of gas they are putting in my tank. I use this gas to carbonate beverages. Claiming all CO2 is the same is incorrect.”

“Ace is the place! Carolina Ace epitomizes the “Helpful Hardware Man” commercials I remember from my youth. And that includes staff of whatever gender.Ace is not “the store I go to if I can’t find it closer at the big box” it’s “my GO-TO” store.Unlike the big box stores, you don’t have to spend 15 minutes just trying to find someone who can help you (and then can’t). I sometimes come looking for a fitting or doohickie for which I have no name but can only attempt to describe. They help me find it, with a smile. It’s a pleasant experience, not a frustrating one.Also, they care about quality. When I need a good shovel, or a nice heavy mattock, I want a GOOD tool, not a cheap one. They’ve got it--or can order it.”

Especially if you need to get copies made of your house key and your contractor super-glued a cover on the key. 3 keys made by Ace Hardware did NOT work but the 3 made by Richard Osborne, Pro Department Supervisor, work beautifully! The simple task of making a key was complicated by the glued-on cover and it required two employees using snips, pliers, a knife and possibly some special incantations to remove the cover and expose the key to be copied. Richard was friendly, helpful, and thorough in his valiant and successful effort to cut me 3 shiny new keys that all work on my house. Thank you for your perseverance, Richard and Home Depot.”

“This is how hardware stores used to be. You want to buy one of something, fine. They also have some of the odd supplies and materials needed in maintaining older homes that you will not find at the big box stores. Their staff is also most helpful and I think they know everything about hardware, plumbing, pumps, power tools and more. Plus they can make custom glass and screens, or repair the ones you might need. I still use a pair of custom aluminum framed windows to fit in my odd dimensioned awning style windows in the winter for added insulation. I think it is also the only place around here to find the unique hardware items used in mobile homes”
