“Blood draws at labs with my medically complex daughter who has ASD with sensory processing differences are not easy. She is a hard stick on a good day. It takes a lot of preparation on our part and someone who has experience and the ability to put aside their ego and listen to us and get on T’s level and join our world for those few minutes while we are there so we can just get it done. Not everyone can, not everyone has the patience… or the training…it’s just how it is. I called ahead and gave reception a heads up. We went yesterday and the receptionist quickly put 2 and 2 together when we walked in and had already spoke to the phlebotomist and smiled and when I let her know my name, she said I think I spoke to you yesterday!! The phlebotomist came out smiling and read the room, got everything ready before we came back, picked up on the fact we were talking about dogs & cats, (T’s preferred topic of conversation) she commented on T’s doggy t-shirt … i pulled up funny dog videos on my phone to watch together and the phlebotomist pulled up a chair so she wasn’t towering over T, looking at her arms… commenting on the dogs, told us about her dogs and cat… she joined Teagan’s “happy place” to just make it through blood work. We were there a while going at T’s pace, trying to get her veins to make an appearance, doing all the tricks lol Fast forward to today, the phlebotomist at the lab knew we were coming back after yesterday’s labs she had to fast for…for ones that she had to be well fed for. She came out to the waiting area holding something behind her back and said to T, “Ms. T I’ve been waiting for you!! I have a little surprise for you, would you like it now or afterwards?” She had got T a dog stuffy! It meant the world to me that this woman listened and just followed my lead, matched my energy and enthusiasm and picked up on how I was letting T know what was coming next… and then joined right in with us, talking about dogs and cats… and picked up the baton when I passed it to her… letting T know what was coming next…and staying on the dogs and cats topic lol it made all the difference! Every kiddo is different and what works for 1 may not work for the next which is why it is so important to us, that when it comes to the big stuff like this… that needs to happen… the staff work with us as a team so it’s the least traumatic experience for T as possible. We finally found a lab that has staff that go above & beyond to make you feel comfortable and at ease and are excellent at what they do!! We are so grateful beyond words!! Y’all really made T’s day and my momma heart so full! Thank you!! ❤”
