Red Oak Brewery Lager Haus & Biergarten
6905 Konica Drive, WhitsettTerrific place. I've seen it from the road a dozen times passing through on my way to WNC, and never got the chance to try it until yesterday. I was happily surprised to see a solid operation. The architecture and decor is gorgeous, and the sculptures and landscaping in the biergarten add that little something extra. Despite being right off the highway, the biergarten is somewhat insulated from the noise, and there's just a quiet hum coming over the walls.
The beer hall itself is stunning, with long tables and a central bar. My first beer was was a Hummin' Bird, and they really hit the nail on the head with this one. I eventually got the lager flight, and there wasn't a bad one in the bunch.
This brewery has a lot of German influence that it wears on its sleeve, which I admire. It's not that Red Oak has a good biergarten, or that the food was affordable, or that the place is spacious and comfortable. It's clear that behind the scenes, someone here has studied German brewing traditions, and knows how to leverage those to make a good drinking experience. The menu wasn't littered with cherry wheat ales, tangerine triple IPAs, or peanut butter and jelly stouts (a German would say that's not beer anyways). It had good beer, brewed well. A lot of breweries don't aim for that, but Red Oak does, and it's why I'll be coming back.
