I had been searching for non-toxic weights and headed to Canadian Tire, the Fitness Depot, Walmart, even thought, heck, will I have to use Amazon to buy weights? (like the good old school iron cast with no coatings!) - I am not much of an Amazon person at all - once every couple of years I would say. I was also open to elastic bands made of natural rubber.

Being a scientist working at the intersection of conservation, environmental health, social justice and accessibility, I aim for high standards and easily detect greenwashing, which unfortunately is uber present - whether so called recycled petrochemicals in bathing suits or others.

Back to our story. I walked into Sports Expert and was having a bit of a heavy day. Alex (Alesandra) was super lovely and understood what I was looking for, checked in with some colleagues and referred me to Jake (M!). I was pleasantly surprised by Jake's curiosity and lack of judgment when spoke about Multiple Chemical Sensitivities (chemically-sensitive, reacting to fragrance, offgassing from synthetic rubber and much gym and workout equipment) and my field work and research where I witnessed waste being burned due to lack of management or mold exposure.

Jake is very mature young man, well-educated, compassionate and curious. He showed me some weights that did not match and suggested elastic bands. I mentioned that it would be lovely if companies would list all materials and ingredients in general. Asked if could do a sniff test and lo and behold, no offgassing, no synthetic smell. Was already ready to get them and we turned the package and noticed it was written natural rubber.

Alignment. I was extremely happy and made the purchase (let's say between Alex and Jake, I felt already that this day had turned around!) When I got to the cash, I asked the staff member where I could leave a review. I just happened to be Alyssa's first day and she also went above and beyond and we had another lovely chat and she was also very aware about chemical sensitivities.

I had not been to Sports Experts in a long while - or many other stores in general because I am not used to seeing actually clean products. Safe to say I will definitely be back and hope to see these amazing young adults again! I have to say the customer service in general in the past 4-5 years has been very different and not for the best. These folks were a breath of fresh air! I hope they are celebrated!

“This place has been around for years. They had a change in administration around 2022 or so and revamped the store at the time. It’s a pleasure to see they keep customer svc at the top of their list. Owners are involved and present in the operation of the store.
