Carnton was built in 1826 and owned by the McGavock family. During the Battle of Franklin on November 30, 1864, the house served as a Confederate field hospital. The McGavock Confederate Cemetery is on the property. Visitors learn the story of the farm, the battle, and how the Civil War redefined America. History lovers should visit Franklin, TN, especially Carnton. Tours are led by knowledgeable guides who bring the place alive. The storytelling is amazing, covering plantation owners and enslaved people. The property is beautiful inside and out. Guests find the experience engaging and worthwhile. Highly recommend the tour of this beautiful house & its outbuildings, including the surviving slave housing. The field hospital & family-run Confederate cemetery are impressive, unique, & moving. It is hallowed ground.
