The Broken Spoke is a true honky tonk and dancehall with a rich history in country music. It is a great place for tourists and locals, with a very friendly staff and an amazing atmosphere. The venue features a dining room and a separate dancehall, often with multiple bands playing good old country and great dance music. On Saturday nights, they offer entertaining dance classes before the open dancing, where you can two-step and waltz all night. The food is some of the best in Austin, with highlights like country fried chicken, chicken fried steak, and yummy cheese fries. The beer is cold and the dance floor is famously packed. This historical building is a must-visit, with everyone agreeing you have to go at least once. Be prepared as it is cash only.
What a fun place! The band was great and the crowd was so varied and so encompassing. I did not know how to two step but was asked to dance and taught how to do it. Such the penultimate Texas experience.

40 years I've been coming here, a great spot for western, country music and dancing. However the new dance teacher isn't hospitable, disparages people, and makes racist comments about how they look. Save yourself $10 and learn two step on YouTube then show up at 9pm for great live music and a great dance community.
