About Mission Concepción
Mission Concepción is a beautiful and historic site in San Antonio, known as the oldest unrestored stone church in the United States still used for worship. Established in 1716 and moved to San Antonio in 1731, it played a role in converting and educating Native Americans, especially the Coahuiltecan tribes, in Spanish culture, agriculture, and religion. The mission features well-preserved Spanish colonial architecture, including original frescoes and murals on its walls, and a historic dome that remains one of the few original mission domes still intact. Visitors often describe the experience as peaceful and moving, with friendly and compassionate tour guides who explain the history well. The site is a UNESCO World Heritage site and has recently undergone preservation work on its façade, adding to its beauty. Admission is free, and the grounds include outdoor chapels and serene surroundings that allow visitors to reflect on centuries of history. Overall, Mission Concepción offers a meaningful glimpse into the past and is highly recommended for anyone interested in San Antonio’s rich heritage.
