Hotel San Carlos in Phoenix is a historic hotel built in 1928 in the Italian Renaissance style, recognized on the National Register of Historic Places since 1983. Its exterior exudes a glamorous, yesteryear charm, with Art Deco influences that reflect its Roaring Twenties origins. The hotel was once a state-of-the-art facility, featuring air conditioning, elevators, circulating chilled water, and steam heat, making it a pioneering structure for its time. The building's architecture and décor bring a nostalgic feel, and it has been briefly seen in Alfred Hitchcock's 1960 film Psycho. The hotel’s location is convenient, close to the convention center, making it popular among business travelers. It also offers beautiful rooftop views of Phoenix. Over the years, many celebrities such as John F. Kennedy, Marilyn Monroe, and Clark Gable have stayed there. Guests appreciate the hotel’s historical charm and its efforts to maintain its original character. Some find the rooms to be worn, with thin walls, small bathrooms, and basic amenities like no in-room glasses or coffee. However, others mention that the rooms are clean, comfortable, and have all necessary amenities, including good WiFi. The staff is generally described as helpful, though sometimes minimal. The hotel features in-house eateries like Centrico and Seamus McAffrey’s, and its ghost legends add a mysterious touch to the experience. Overall, Hotel San Carlos is recommended for those interested in experiencing a piece of Phoenix history, enjoying its architecture, décor, and legends, rather than expecting modern luxury. It is a charming, nostalgic hotel that suits travelers who appreciate its historic ambiance and convenient location.
Cute Historical hotel. Dated in terms of TV, room furnishings, and a non-working pool... at time of this writing. Comfortable, clean, quiet, and a bargain for those not needing modern luxury branded hotel.

Really well maintained and in the heart of downtown. Be aware that you have to pay for your parking. The parking garage is conveniently located in the same building as the hotel though. Making it easy and convenient to walk from your parking garage spot to the hotel entrance
