“Not quite sure where the previous owner shipped off to. I gotta say, however, for as much as I was starting to really value what the old man had there, the new staff (presumably under new ownership) and the new look of the place doesn't leave me with much to complain about. The lady during the day is always very efficient. When I walk in and before I hit the counter, she already has my item(s) in hand and waiting with everything cued up. I've seen various staff there on different nights but they all seem pretty nice and normal. This place has very comparable prices to all the other smoke shops on Telegraph. But if you're like me in this case, you'll go to the people that treat you attentively, effectively and without attitude. This place does all of those things. Worth another 1000 visits for me. Simple, clean and cordial. Very nice.”
“I LOVE having a convenience store so close to where I live. This store has a lot of the things I need at the moment. (even though they could add a little more items) What keeps me coming back, though, is Sam. Very friendly. Very helpful. In my opinion, he's the biggest asset in the store. “For 13 years I have been a patron of Whelans, their tabacco blend was my final blend before quitting tobacco- and they are the supplier of all my water pipes. I had an ex buy me nice glass from different parts of the state-- very specific builds with great rips. When the last one broke, I wasnt sure how I'd afford a similiar water pipe. I went to Whelans on a budget with the speicifcs of the build, and Whelans had several items to show me-- as they often can do if you walk in with needs and a budget.
I love love love the water pipe I purchased, not only does it hit SMOOTHER then my ex's gift (at like a quarter of the price), it's stronger, durable, more reliable peice. It's significantly less flashy-- but basically the exact utility I needed and actually an upgrade in terms of quality of life!

“Been a customer for over a decade. The staff wants your business, perhaps it comes across as being pushy but you gotta understand the level of competition hi times faces being one of a half dozen smoke shops in the immediate area. While his selection isn't the most premium, there are great deals to be had and the more you frequent the shop, the friendlier the deals get. Make educated decisions regarding your purchases and you will score the greatest deals in Berkeley. If you go during the day the owner is working and he is a good dude, definitely not the typical Downtown/telegraph mark up. Don't be offended if the sales pitch is a bit aggressive. I think his employees are bonused on sales volume.”
“I have been a huge fan of this place e for many years. Now I know there's a bunch of shops like this in Berkeley, I ve been to em all. What sets this one apart is the open, no pressure approach they take. That and all the really cool stuff.from hand woven bags to jewelry to statues of Shiva and Gonesh. Its a real joy to go in for some pipe tobacco, n get a lil insight into ...whatever sparkle catches my eye THAT particular day. Always been a pleasure.
