“Had a great experience at this hotel, coming back with my family! Room was clean, amenities were nice and location is excellent! The ONLY thing was I think the A/C in my room was out so when I first entered the room, there was a portable unit they already had installed. The staff absolutely made up for it, especially Cairo! He was awesome and anytime we asked anybody for anything, they helped immediately. Excellent team they've assembled, highly recommend this hotel.”

“We did the Queen Mary Graveyard Shift Tour at MIDNIGHT and had a really good time! 👻🚢

The tour is about two hours and takes you through some fascinating areas of the ship. Our two guides were fantastic. I believe one was named JB or possibly JV, and I think the other was Melissa—apologies if I’m remembering incorrectly! Both were knowledgeable, engaging and did a wonderful job explaining the ship’s history.

I have back issues and was worried about the physical demands, but it was surprisingly manageable. The toughest part was near the beginning when we climbed roughly three flights of stairs at once. After that, there’s plenty of movement, more downstairs and mostly shorter climbs. There ARE quite a few stairs overall, so if you cannot safely use stairs, definitely investigate accessibility before booking. But if you can handle stairs with some back pain like I can, I found it much easier than expected.

Exploring the boiler room, first-class swimming pool, captain’s quarters and other areas after midnight was VERY cool. We learned about the ship’s history and its confirmed deaths, and the tour sent me down a MASSIVE Queen Mary history rabbit hole afterward. 😂 There is so much fascinating history here, particularly surrounding WWII, that I left wanting to know even more.

My biggest criticism is that I expected the Graveyard Shift to be more immersive paranormally. I wasn’t expecting anyone to manufacture a haunting 😂, but I imagined we might hear the history of an active location and then spend a couple quiet minutes listening and seeing whether anything happened.

I think this tour could become AMAZING if guests could rent simple ghost-hunting equipment—EMF readers, audio recorders, etc.—and have brief periods of silence after each explanation to actually investigate. Imagine hearing the history of the first-class pool or boiler room, then everyone goes silent for two minutes while guests listen or record. THAT would make a midnight tour incredibly immersive without making it cheesy or staged.

As it currently exists, I’d describe it more as a fascinating late-night historical/paranormal tour than a ghost-hunting experience. We still really enjoyed it; the “Graveyard Shift” name and midnight start simply had us expecting more opportunity to personally investigate.

One other suggestion: PLEASE keep the gift shop open for about 30 minutes after the midnight tour!

The tour essentially delivered a group of people excited about the Queen Mary directly to a CLOSED gift shop. 😂 After two hours exploring the ship, I absolutely wanted a magnet or little souvenir but couldn’t buy anything. Even having someone cover the register briefly after the tour would probably generate plenty of sales.

Overall, we had a really fun experience. JB/JV and Melissa were wonderful, the history was fascinating, exploring the Queen Mary after midnight was incredibly atmospheric, and they left me wanting to learn MUCH more about the ship—which is a pretty great compliment for a historical tour.

Add optional ghost-hunting equipment, a few quiet investigation periods, and PLEASE let us buy a magnet afterward 😂, and this could go from a really good tour to an unforgettable one.

“We just stayed one night. Very clean. Now the bad is the parking. We had to park at the country marrita that was 2 blocks away from the hotel and on top of that you have to pay 20$ to park. It is what it is. Other then that the stay was great”

“What a gem! I stayed for 4 nights and was so happy I chose to stay here over a faceless hotel chain. The location is fantastic, just about a 10 minute walk from the beach. The house is lovely, with antique furniture, historic photos of Long Beach, and just an overall cozy vibe. If you're charmed by historic homes, this is your place.

My room was comfortable, very clean, and had all that I needed for a pleasant stay - including an adorable little iron and ironing board! Staying on the south side of the building, there was a little bit of street noise from Broadway, but I put in some earplugs and slept perfectly fine. I had a key code for the front door and my room, which takes away the worry of losing a key or key card.

As a big morning breakfast person, I was so happy to start each day with Pat's home cooked breakfast. The spread always included a small dish of cut fruit (not just melons!), toast, a savory entree, tea, coffee, juice, and cereal. Best of all, Pat was so nice to talk to!

“This was the first time staying here and I am quite impressed by the location. Different food options within walking distance and close to the willow st station. Rates are a lot cheaper than staying all the way in downtown long beach. I will definitely be staying here again. Staff was friendly and very responsive. “We really enjoyed our stay here. This is a great location, less than a mile from Long Beach Airport (LGB) and blocks away from lots of shopping and dining options. The rooms are clean, spacious and well appointed. The beds and linens are delightfully comfortable. The free hot breakfast in the morning is a nice perk with enough variety to satisfy almost any appetite. The staff in nearly every department is exceptional. Definitely would stay here again.”

“Great stay, good room. They were very accommodating & it was very appreciative. We stayed there to do a jetski adventure from the bay across to Catalina Island. Diana was very accommodating after we checked out, did our adventures & helped us by letting us change clothes (wet) & clean up a bit before we got on the road & drove to Fresno (5hrs). The hotel is in a nice spot that you can scroll down the bay in the evening. Not far from the Tequila Mexican restaurant that was really good. I'd definitely stay again!!”

“I really enjoyed my stay at The Varden Hotel. You honestly can’t beat the price for the location — it’s in a great area of downtown Long Beach with a lot nearby and easy access to everything.

The hotel itself was clean, modern, and had a nice boutique feel. The rooms are definitely very small for two people, and the walls are thin so you can hear a lot around you, but honestly it didn’t ruin the experience for me. Overall I liked it a lot and would stay again, especially for the price and location.”

“Booked this hotel last minute and I'm glad I did. I needed a quick getaway from the LA area and on a whim.... decided to book a 2 night stay. I checked in somewhat late and was greeted by Daniela. She was amazing! She was very patient, informative, and knowledgeable of the area. She gave me great recommendations on restaurants and bars in the area and also recommend things to do during my brief stay (aerial tramway was dope). Traveling alone sometimes can be a little nerve wrecking, so being greeted with good positive energy really set the tone. Thank you Daniela .The room I stayed in was cool. The partition by the sink came off a couple times, but I just popped it back in. The sink water wasn't the clearest either and the water took forever to drain. Other than that... no major complaints lol. The jacuzzi in the room was very spacious and relaxing!I was too busy being a tourist that I didn't get a chance reap the benefits of the pool, but it looked like a lot of fun. The location was great too. I was able to walk to many restaurants, bars, and shops throughout downtown. I'd definitely be back here. Stay classy Palm Springs”

“This is a decent place. Clean and well-kept. The building itself is old and the room I had was a bit small for my size. There is no elevator, so avoid heavy luggage.”

“I stayed for 1 night and overall I had a good experience. The front desk staff was nice and check-in was quick and efficient.

My room was a good size, clean, and looked like the pictures shown on the website. The room was comfortable and had everything basic you need for your stay, like an iron, hair dryer, soap, towels, etc. The air conditioning was also working well.

The hotel has free parking, which is always a plus, and the amenities looked nice for staying there. The location is also good and convenient.

Overall, I had a good stay and I would stay here again.”

“Spacious, clean room with just the basics and plenty of power outlets and desk space. The room included a mini fridge and microwave oven. Check-in and check-out were smooth and easy even with late night arrival. Location is conveniently close to Signal Hill, the traffic circle, and also Orange Ave for getting to downtown Long Beach. Noise from the neighborhood, PCH, or other rooms can get through the room’s walls.”

“Like every year we come to California for the beaches so this time Quality inn was the place we chose to stay for a week. We gat here around 10pm and the check in was easy, front desk was nice and I was happy that we had gotten our two rooms together like I had requested, this was a family trip and we had little kids and daughters with us so I needed them to be together or at least closer. We got them next to each other wich was a plus! Beds were comfortable and the rooms were clean. The complementary breakfast was good they dont do any variation its just buffet style eggs, sausage, waffles, yogurt, oatmeal, coffee, juice, tea. But the lady that does the breakfast for the majority of the trip could put a little more effort in to it. The only day which was our last day, a different person prepared it and it was delicious, the eggs didn't have any water and the sausages were toasted! And my only other complain is tha A/C it is really loud. Other wise this location is great! Close to the beaches which is what we came for!”

“Location of this place had me skeptical but room changed my mind. Rooms are very nice and clean. Only issue is shower is in room. They need add privacy curtains for families so everyone cant watch you shower. Very limited parking. Its a block from the beach. The staff very professional and friendly. We will definitely be staying here again.”

“Staff was super friendly, the property is really clean. My wife and I stayed here for the warp tour weekend, worked out really well, we would stay here again. Only cons, could use a small sidewalk to gas station so easy walk to starbucks for coffee, 1 elevator was down so was a bit crowded and hard to get elevator during checkout.”

“Perhaps one of the best motels in that area in long Beach with its unique and elegant design the court-yard glows at night creating a vibrant and attractive atmosphire. Shops are near mostly walking distance. With all units facing the court-yard with no steps or curb in or around the rooms it's very convenient to get around with a wheelchair. Rooms are larger then avrage, spacious and very well-maintained, fresh and comfortable, well decorated, walk-in-shower, pet freindly. Good value for your money.My first choice in that area. Highly recomanded.”

“Pretty good hotel to stay at.

Pros: Comfortable bed(s) , nice view from the top floor, pool and hot tub. It’s a bit of an older hotel but it’s give you a nice place to stay.

Cons:
Warm to a little cold shower water. Wish it was a bit hot
Noisy especially when traffic is nearby.( it didn’t bother me that much since I’m a heavy sleeper )
No free breakfast

“Ok so we have stayed in a lot of motels and hotels and the lady’s that were running this place on Christmas Eve deserve this review. They treated us like we were home on winter vacation from collage not complete strangers that were staying a night. We thought the rooms had fridges so they got a bag of ice and a cooler for us. Just the tip of the ice burg. On top of the treatment like we were at the Hilton the rooms are newly redone very tastefully. Somebody put some money into it and it shows I can tell you by the neighborhood that that place did not always look like that m. So whoever did it well done. Again to the staff this is the couple you help out thanks and happy new year.”
