“Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden is a peaceful hidden gem tucked inside California State University, Long Beach. The garden is smaller than some larger Japanese gardens, but the layout feels carefully planned with winding paths, traditional landscaping, a koi pond, waterfalls, bridges, and quiet corners throughout. It is the type of place where taking your time matters more than trying to see everything quickly, and the smaller size actually makes the experience feel more intimate.

The koi pond is easily the centerpiece of the garden and one of the most enjoyable parts to spend time around. The fish are large and active, and the surrounding greenery, stone features, and water elements create a very relaxing atmosphere. The garden does a good job balancing natural scenery with traditional Japanese design, with each section offering a slightly different view and feeling as you walk through.

What I liked most about this garden is how calm it feels despite being located on a college campus. It feels separated from the surrounding area once you enter, making it a nice place for a quiet walk, photography, or just taking a break. The landscaping is well maintained, and the entire space has a slower pace that encourages you to actually stop and appreciate the details.

The visit is fairly quick since the garden is compact, but it works well as a relaxing stop rather than a destination that takes up an entire afternoon. Reservations are required, so it is worth checking availability before going. Admission is free, although parking is an extra cost and can be the main inconvenience.

Overall, Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden is a beautiful spot if you are looking for a peaceful escape rather than a large attraction. “Top Floor Event Space at The Carvery is a hidden gem. After 31 years of producing an event for our nonprofit organization, we needed to change things up largely due to the limited space opportunities in Downtown Long Beach. We worked with their superb staff and secured the space along with buying out the restaurant for the evening. After the event, nearly every guest comment was about how special the space was and how delicious the food was as well. There are so many options for using the space and the restaurant - staff there considered every option to make our event the best for us and our dear guests. The day after the event, we actually booked the space again for 2027 - it was THAT good. If you asked me what went wrong, I would honestly tell you NOTHING. If you're looking for an event space - don't sleep on seeing if this is the right space for you!”

“If you are looking for the best candy themed business in LA County make sure that you visit. Candified is located in the Belmont Shore community of Long Beach CA. They have so much your mind will be blown so be careful. They hold private parties for all. You need to come in and take in all of the varieties to choose from. See you there!”

“Last weekend we rented DI Studios for my husbands 50th birthday party. Phyllis was my main contact since I inquired. She is prompt friendly and easy going. This made planning the party easy! We did get a chance to meet the owner, Rusty. He's also friendly and easy going. He created a space that is unique which is what I was looking for. I want to thank them for really allowing me to make my husbands party memorable!!”

“So many cool exhibits. I've never seen so many starfish and jellyfish before. The kids were so excited to see all the sea life. They have a rain forest exhibit with those cool poison dart frogs. Multiple touch pools. We all enjoyed and it was well worth it. Parking is right there and I paid $12 for 3 hours. Many restaurants nearby. The whole thing was dope.”

“We really enjoy the food here, and the prices are quite reasonable. The atmosphere is dated, it reminds me of every hotel lounge from movies dated in the 70s.
The service, very nice people and accommodating but quite slow, and really don't check on you enough. I drink large quantities of water, but I was left with an empty cup frequently, and my wife who does not drink as much found herself in the same predicament.
Over all though, we like the place and is becoming a staple of our Sunday afternoons”

“We had my son’s first birthday party here, and it turned out great!

The space is VERY cute. It is already very nicely decorated with tasteful greenery, wooden tables, and accent chairs. All we had to do was add some balloons and a little decoration. There are mirrors along one wall which really opens up the space.

The AC was working great and was very much appreciated for those of us setting up even though the weather wasn’t that hot.

There is a bar area for drinks. And we used the back smaller room to occupy the kids and keep them away from the front door.

There is plenty of free parking, which makes it so convenient for guests.

Ronda and all the staff were very helpful in answering all my questions ahead of time. I would 100% recommend this space for small events.”

“Just got married here in July — both ceremony and reception. And, it was perfect! The venue was beautiful and easily decorated the way I wanted it to be. Easily fit our guest list of 200 people and they just got a new, bigger dance floor! Food was amazing. We had multiple guests tell us that it was the best food they’ve ever had at a wedding (highly recommend the mini beef wellingtons for your appetizers). Anastasia was lovely to work with and I am truly so sad that the wedding planning process is over. But, so grateful TGiS and the Betty gave me the most perfect wedding.”

“Visited this course again after a long time and had a really good time. It’s definitely not an easy course because the fairways are pretty narrow, so you have to keep the ball in play. That actually makes it more fun and challenging.

One thing I really like about this place is that it always feels a little cooler than other courses nearby, so even on hot days the round is still enjoyable. The course was in decent shape, and the pro shop staff were very friendly and welcoming.

Not the easiest course around, but it’s a fun track and I’d definitely come back and play it again.”

“Born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii and then relocating to Las Vegas, Nevada - any time I get the chance to be close to or next to the water...This is and always will be my charter of choice. Today was my second time onboard and it was an even more amazing experience this time around.It started off a bit quiet but soon enough we were all blessed to see a pod of bottlenose dolphins, a sperm whale (which we were told are a rare sighting), a blue whale, and more than a few Mola Mola (Ocean Sunfish). Harbor Breeze tickets can be purchased online or at their booth (dock #2). I believe it's a few dollars off when purchased online (either way, it's worth it). Seating is plentiful no matter where you decide to be, and they also have snacks/drinks/alcohol available for purchase. As of 06/08/23 parking is $9 in the Aquarium parking garage ($8 w|validation) And please, tips are appreciated! Mahalo, Harbor Breeze Charter &' the crew!”

“We did the Queen Mary Graveyard Shift Tour at MIDNIGHT and had a really good time! 👻🚢

The tour is about two hours and takes you through some fascinating areas of the ship. Our two guides were fantastic. I believe one was named JB or possibly JV, and I think the other was Melissa—apologies if I’m remembering incorrectly! Both were knowledgeable, engaging and did a wonderful job explaining the ship’s history.

I have back issues and was worried about the physical demands, but it was surprisingly manageable. The toughest part was near the beginning when we climbed roughly three flights of stairs at once. After that, there’s plenty of movement, more downstairs and mostly shorter climbs. There ARE quite a few stairs overall, so if you cannot safely use stairs, definitely investigate accessibility before booking. But if you can handle stairs with some back pain like I can, I found it much easier than expected.

Exploring the boiler room, first-class swimming pool, captain’s quarters and other areas after midnight was VERY cool. We learned about the ship’s history and its confirmed deaths, and the tour sent me down a MASSIVE Queen Mary history rabbit hole afterward. 😂 There is so much fascinating history here, particularly surrounding WWII, that I left wanting to know even more.

My biggest criticism is that I expected the Graveyard Shift to be more immersive paranormally. I wasn’t expecting anyone to manufacture a haunting 😂, but I imagined we might hear the history of an active location and then spend a couple quiet minutes listening and seeing whether anything happened.

I think this tour could become AMAZING if guests could rent simple ghost-hunting equipment—EMF readers, audio recorders, etc.—and have brief periods of silence after each explanation to actually investigate. Imagine hearing the history of the first-class pool or boiler room, then everyone goes silent for two minutes while guests listen or record. THAT would make a midnight tour incredibly immersive without making it cheesy or staged.

As it currently exists, I’d describe it more as a fascinating late-night historical/paranormal tour than a ghost-hunting experience. We still really enjoyed it; the “Graveyard Shift” name and midnight start simply had us expecting more opportunity to personally investigate.

One other suggestion: PLEASE keep the gift shop open for about 30 minutes after the midnight tour!

The tour essentially delivered a group of people excited about the Queen Mary directly to a CLOSED gift shop. 😂 After two hours exploring the ship, I absolutely wanted a magnet or little souvenir but couldn’t buy anything. Even having someone cover the register briefly after the tour would probably generate plenty of sales.

Overall, we had a really fun experience. JB/JV and Melissa were wonderful, the history was fascinating, exploring the Queen Mary after midnight was incredibly atmospheric, and they left me wanting to learn MUCH more about the ship—which is a pretty great compliment for a historical tour.

Add optional ghost-hunting equipment, a few quiet investigation periods, and PLEASE let us buy a magnet afterward 😂, and this could go from a really good tour to an unforgettable one.
