“My son and I stayed at the hotel for his birthday. The general manager wrote a hand written letter welcoming us, and there was chilled lemonade and fresh made chocolate left for us in our room upon arrival. Franky set it up for us, and was genuinely so kind and helpful when we arrived. Johnny at the front desk was welcoming and provided us with good information for our stay. The whole hotel has a lovely, clean scent. We enjoyed the lap pool, the comfy beds, and the hot tub. What a wonderful experience! Thanks, Westgate, for making this a memorable birthday celebration for my son.Nearby activities: Gaslamp district is within walking distance - and is lively in the evening”

“This is a gorgeous hotel. Steps away from the beach with a lovely restaurant. As part of our booking we had a free drink and access to the gym and bikes. It is so close to the bike path and lots of eateries. It is a lovely place to really rest and relax.”

“I celebrated my 25th birthday solo at the Fairmont. Before the trip, I sent various email communications to the Fairmont concierge, and each time they referred to me as “Mr.” I replied to each email, making it clear that I was “Ms.” In this day and age, a woman with a unisex name should not be that confusing.I asked time to reserve some spa time and was told the spa would reach out with availability. Then the concierge reached out again, calling me Mr. and asked if I wanted a female or male masseuse. I said female, and signed as Ms. The concierge replied with Okay, I will pass it along and then called me Mr. again. The spa never reached out with availability. While this encounter was incredibly grating, I tried not to let it sour my birthday trip.I specifically asked for early check in and was told yes. Then when I arrived on the day of check in, I had to wait hours to be checked in. I arrived in the morning at 11 am and did not receive a room until 4 pm, which meant I had to cancel an entire day of plans. After I finally received a room, I figured my luggage would already be there, but they were not. I called the front desk to have my luggage carried down. 30 minutes later, they finally showed. Before the trip, I explained that I was celebrating a birthday, but there was no zero acknowledgment of my birthday the entire trip.I could not make dinner reservations since my day was so delayed, so I ordered room service. When they answered the phone, they asked “is this for two? Will your husband be joining?” This was baffling. I was on a solo trip. I arrived alone. I was rooming alone. What husband? It was bizarre. The entire trip, the few occasions I called the front desk or room service, they asked about an imaginary husband I do not have.Perhaps I did not understand their joke. The equestrian centre was closed, which is unfortunate as I I was really looking forward to that.Spiders. I kept finding spiders in the bathroom, in the tub, on the beside table. I’ve attached a photo of one on the bathroom ceiling for reference. On the last day after at a week at Fairmont, I asked for assistance bringing my luggage up. It took so long, I decided to bring my own luggage up, and then someone met me by the elevator to assist. They did not even help load my luggage into the car as I was leaving.I booked with AMEX, and received a letter at the beginning of my stay that outlined the benefits, which includes complimentary breakfast for two every morning, however, I was charged for breakfast. I was so over the entire ordeal that I never even bothered arguing the charge. I just wanted to forget the entire week. It’s not at all how I wanted to spend my 25th. It’s an absolute shame I traveled across the country for an experience such as this. But perhaps I should have had more foresight about how the experience would go considering the email correspondences we exchanged prior to the trip.I give it two stars for the location and the safety.”

“I didn’t like the breakfast selection for such a big hotel it should have more selections for the military members and family since we all have to give up our spouses or family for the service of our country.”

“Had a great stay here! Rooms are great, staff is super friendly, restaurants in the hotel had good food. I do wish the hot tub was open later, I believe it closes around 6? Didn’t get much use out of it due to the early closing time.”

“This isn't a hotel, it's the single best interior design piece in the western hemisphere. It's a surrealist art bar/diner/restaurant/lounge/pool/bowling alley. The fact that they have nightly rooms is a secondary perk. You must see it if you have the chance, whether you stay overnight or just go for drinks.”

“Our family has been staying at the Beach Cottages during Christmas for nearly 30 years!! It has been a tradition we look forward to year after year, and that has a lot to do with our experience at the Beach Cottages! The location is unbeatable! It is right on the boardwalk in PB, just a ways down from the Crystal Pier. It's so close to the beach, you can literally throw a rock from most rooms onto the sand. We have seen many of the same staff working there for decades. Ranging from David and crew at the front desk, to Rafael and Jose in maintenance, to the wonderfully friendly housekeepers! It's always nice to see familiar faces over the years, and have the staff recognize and remember you. In my case, some of these people have "known" me since I was like 10 years old. We've seen this place go through changes and upgrades over the years, from new appliances, to flat-screens from tube TVs. They have both hotel style rooms, as well as cottage style apartments. We've stayed in both, though currently love the views from the 3rd floor. The main 1-bedroom rooms are equipped with a full kitchen, including a stove, oven, microwave, dishwasher, fridge, plates and flatware, in addition to other kitchen tools. There is a separate living/dining area with a couch, soft chair, dining room table and chairs. The couch folds out into a bed which helps sleep more people, or kids. There is a full bathroom with a standup shower and tub. They also have smaller, half rooms. These are attached to the larger rooms and can be used as a 2-room set, or rented individually. The half rooms still have a small fridge and microwave, but no stove/oven or large kitchen sink. As for activities, they have multiple ping pong tables, as well as shuffleboard. They have the equipment out for use during normal operating hours. They've had wooden ping pong tables forever (which would warp over the years due to ocean moisture), though we noticed this year they had replaced the main one with a hard plastic material! They also have BBQ areas, fire pits, and laundry facilities that you can use. We love and look forward to our time at the Beach Cottages each year. We just got back from our annual trip a few days ago, and are already looking forward to going back! Thanks again for all the great service and good memories!”

“We had such a good experience staying here! Throughout our two day stay, every staff member we interacted with was welcoming and accommodating. I loved the funky yellow decor, our comfortable room, and how dog friendly this hotel was. The location of the hotel was ideal, since it was walking distance to everything in Gaslamp and Petco Park. They also had yellow bikes (along with bike helmets and locks) available to rent out for free! We rode them to Balboa Park and had the best time exploring. There was tasty spa water available in the lobby, as well as cookies in the evening, and they gave us two free drink tickets that could be redeemed for alcohol or non-alcoholic beverages. Would absolutely return!”

“Beautiful premises and very nice rooms. The whole hotel was very comfortable and beautiful, would be perfect for a couple wanting a getaway. Food was good as well, and so was the service.”

“Service was exemplary. They offer you a timeshare presentation but will take no for an answer. No request was too small and was immediately fulfilled. The staff was a joy. Our room 507, was large and beautifully decorated. I love the history of the building and highly recommend it. The only small complaint is that the building being old means the sound of your neighbors can bleed through a little bit.Rooms: Large. Great bed. Shower hot, but pressure low.Walkability: Across the Road from Balboa Park and walking distance to many great restaurants. Also for convenience there is a 7-Eleven across the street”

“Really neat to see and open to the public during the day. It was really quiet too since most people assume it's private due to the gate. Unfortunately you couldn't go to the end due to the high waves.”

“Overall, we had a great stay. Great location and overall a clean hotel. We enjoyed the layout of the Murphy bed option instead of a typical sofa sleeper. Love the free breakfast, but each morning my family and I got an omelette the cheese was not melted. I understand they are extremely busy and it’s “free” but would like cheese melted in omelette. Also, hotel is starting to feel extremely worn- decor, carpet, popcorn ceilings, and bathrooms. Staff was very friendly.”

“Great hotel in a great location downtown in San Diego, close to the waterfront and the Gaslamp Quarter. Rooms were large and comfortable. Free drinks and snacks and free breakfast. It was very busy, which meant there were substantial queues at breakfast and happy hour. The only negative was the rates were quite high and valet parking was very expensive on top of that.”

“*** Yes, I'm a fan of Andaz. Overdelivered. *** I was in room #212. It faces out onto the street. King bed was comfortable and desk serviceable. What l really like was the glass enclosed shower. It separates bedroom from the vanity/bathroom. It is clear then shaded once hot water showering. *** Rooftop restaurant/bar is an added plus. ***”

“We had a wonderful two-night stay. The staff is very friendly and the rate was fair. The room was spacious and kitchenette was perfect. The bed was comfortable. The hot tub is gone; if you see it in photos it’s because they’re old. The outdoor pool is great, though, and it’s heated.”

“Awesome location with everything you need. Full bar available, 3 swimming pools and Jacuzzi, restaurants, a market with Starbucks, and you can rent kayaks sup boards too.Although it didn't come with a microwave, they were able to provide one if requested.Sea World is only 5min away too! I definitely will be coming back here.”

“I really liked the hotel and would come back. There are a few things I didn't like as well. What I liked:Everything looked clean and modern.Easy to book the room. The pool is nice and the perfect temperature. They have games by the pool and bathrooms right next to it. Lots of lounge areas by the pool. They have a couple nice restaurants inside the hotel that offer room service or pickup. The tip is included already when you order the room service. They have a little shop you can get some food, wine, ice cream, even some Starbucks, water, a few healthy foods like bananas, apples, oranges. What I didn't like:The shower door is one of those terrible half doors you watch water fall out onto the floor and freeze your buns because it's just a half door. Please change that noooowwww.Still have those ooolllddd phones that do not work good. I tried to dial housekeeping 10 times the button doesn't work just beeps. The fridge is sooo small good luck getting your room service food in those things. No microwave in room. Major fail. The windows open. It really scares me because I have a child and she started messing with it opening it up and thankfully she's old enough to know better but other kids younger....too dangerous. They have signs that they have a tracker in the towels so if you don't return the towel they will charge you. Like really??? Trackers in the towels? Sounds really tacky. To be enjoying your vacation and then to see a sign like that..weird. You can't just have a normal please return your towels sign? Are people stealing the towels around here? And they have a ton of cameras everywhere so is there crime happening at this hotel? My daughter and I were laying down and a housekeeper walked right in. She didn't say housekeeping or anything and as we looked over to her all she said was what time would we like her to come and then she called out some times. Definitely make sure you put that "presently occupied" sign on your door or a housekeeper will walk right in.”

“Excellent hotel!! Very nice staff and the layout is great. Only complaint is that they put us in a room with a connecting door to the other room which you could HEAR VOICES TALKING next door. That was not ok whatsoever. Also the loud lobby beat/music is highly annoying!!Valet parking is about $60 per day.Rooms: Not very large rooms.”

“The hotel was nice and the bed was very comfortable. The hotel itself was very clean. The staff was friendly. The area is very busy (there was a baseball game that day). The area is very loud. We walked down the street to get some dinner and my head was pounding from all the noise. There is also a lot of smoking in the area (not the hotel itself just the surrounding area). It was a bit of a struggle to get to the hotel (terrifying when a driver tried to turn the wrong direction onto a one way road changed his mind and almost hit us when he was swerving back and forth). $60 for parking is outrageous.”

“The hotel location is perfect, we had an amazing ocean view to wake up to with a small patio to relax and enjoy sunset. It’s very central to pacific beach and very close to many restaurants and bars. The rooms were clean and nicely decorated, very ocean, surfer, and beach themed.Hotel has a cozy pool and hot tub, paid off street parking in a structure. The breakfast is a well rounded continental breakfast with eggs, sausage, waffles, cereal, and fruit.”
